Title search or g.m search

So is there a way to back search our truck titles to see where the truck came from? What dealer in what state sold it new? Who owned it in the past and for how long? Just wondering.

Me too. I bought my truck about ten year's ago. It was suppose to have spent it's life in colorado. It would be nice to know it's history.

Re: Title search or g.m search

I doubt very seriously that GM will have any paperwork on these trucks. I know that they did not keep any for muscle cars. Your only hope is to do a title search in the state where your truck was last known to be titled. The privacy laws of ~2001 has made it very difficult, though.

Re: Title search or g.m search

If GM records existed or miraculously appeared there would be many very upset folks in the collector car business. Many 60s and 70s Chevy vehicles have no motor Id's in the VIN. Short of the ever elusive build sheet there is no way to prove the car or trucks born with equipment. Take the 1967 vette 427 435 horse tri-power, it's commonly reported in the corvette community that there are currently more in circulation than were ever produced (437). Take into account that many never survived the hayday and its easy to see the fraud that's crept into the automotive world. Same for Z28s, Chevelle LS6, Z16s, LT1s, and on and on.

How far back did the dmv start keeping record's on computer? Can we access it online? Is there a fee?

Re: Title search or g.m search

The only true glimpse at the past is to find the build sheet. That will include the factory it's built at [also embedded in VIN code] and what dealer it was first delivered to.
I was lucky, I found mine in jigsaw-like fragments inside the passenger door. I've since lost it but I remember it was made at the Fremont Plant in Nor Cal. and delivered to Felix Chevrolet in Los Angeles. I'm possibly the 3rd owner.

A 2nd true glimpse is if you bought it from the original owner and he has the original title and it list the previous owner as the dealer that had it new. I got pretty lucky on this one though.

Re: Title search or g.m search

You can do a title search in your state - look on the states dmv website
you likley will have to sign a waiver saying that you will not do anything with the information that you gather
every state is different.
I have done searchs in Ohio, Indiana & mississippi on my truck.
all different ways that I had to work the system
Mississippi was the most frustrating - they can see on the microfish how many prior owners are listed but they will not tell you.
You have to submit your paperwork with a nominal fee for each title search - if you truck has had 5 prior owners you have to pay for the title search 5 times to get all of the information - but you have to guess how many you pay for - the money is a one way trip
