What do I need to know and do to replace my hinge pins. Tried hanging my doors last night and wow do they move.

your better off getting hinges straight from gm man. i did the hinge repair thing and there back like they used too be new door hinges will be soon as well as hood hinges.

Called local dealer and they actually have a set in stock about $40 for both doors. pins and bushings

If you can wait to install those pins and bushings, I would check online OEM GM vendors for prices:
p/n 20046147 for the pin (sold 5 per pack) and p/n 9721917 for the bushing (sold 20 per pack)
I have seen discount dealers advertise them with a one piece price rather than the standard GM pack.

i dont meen getting the pins and bushings from GM i meen to actually get new hinges from them

I did mine in a day with the doorman hardened steel pins and brass bushings. Its alot of work and requires a 4 inch cut off wheel, some punches and indexed drill bits. I left half of the bracket still bolted to the cab so I did not have to adjust the door so much.

Pro's of the doorman pins:

-I doubt they will ever wear out.
-under 5 bucks for parts.

Cons:

-Carefull surgical cuts on door pins with a cut off wheel.
-Takes all damn day.

I replaced the driver side top hinge pin and bushings in 20 mins. Door has no play in it now.

Step 1: Open door all the way and support with floor jack (Put something soft in between door and jack);

Step 2: Cut old pin in the middle using a dremel or other suitable (small) cutting tool;

Step 3: Slide old pin pieces and bushing out (Remember how the bushings came out, ie. in between or above the hinge flanges); and

Step 4: Replace bushings and pin. You will need to tap the pin from above to seat it in the new bushing.

Mine were from LMC. Brass bushings with steel pin. 10 bucks for 2 pins and 4 bushings.

Lots of confusion on buying these gm hinge pins. GM prices them as described above, packs of 5 pins and 20 bushings - so, if you buy 10 pins and 20 bushings you will have enough to do 5 doors (2 bushings per pin). I have seen a few dealers willing to sell just one pin and 2 bushings, but the big suppliers will not. I have never bought anything from parts giant. Check out my first failed attempt with Dorman hinge pins (too big in diameter) and my second successful attempt with GM pins.

I bought 2 packs of pins and one pack of bushings (all GM) and sold the leftover pins and bushings to others here on the for sale site - you might want to check there.

I went to the local hot rod shop and bought 4 pin sets with bushings for like $4 a set. they look to be from the HELP section. They come with standard and oversize bushings. going to try to install tonight will let you know how it goes. Do I need to take my fenders off? just hung them the other day and hood is still off, would it make it easier? only 3 bolts holding them on right now

Those are Dorman hinge pins which will not fit in your hinges - the diameter is too big. Check the first link to a previous post I noted above. Unless you hog out the holes in your hinges with a round file the pins won't fit. I would advise genuine GM pins only.

I picked up a complete set for both doors from GM. $50. Took it all home and the HELP kit is almost the same, same pins. So I planned to use that, but the bushings seemed a little sloppy so I broke them trying to pull them out. ended up using the GM bushings and they were nice and tight. Only replaced the driver door, and it was easier to take them off the truck, only because everything was loose and only had 3 bolts holding my fender on. I would recommend cutting the pin near the top and sticking a flat screwdriver in the cut and prying the top pin out then stick a phillips screw driver in the top and driving the bottom pin down. That is what worked for me. not that hard, took me about 30 mins and the door was back on

I got bushings from classic chevy. They worked out nicely. I held the doors with an engine hoist while I did the repair.

The only time pins and bushings won't fix it is if the bushings were so worn out that the holes got enlarged. I've seen it happen dozens of times, they make an oversized bushing kit just for that reason. Hinges on these old trucks should never have to be replaced unless there is some sort of impact involved or you backed out of the garage with the door open. Just make sure you do top and bottom both. It is not a difficult job, especially once you've done a few dozen of them and have the proper tool.

Dorman 38400 is a set of pins and 4 bushings for 67-72. Possibly the same part for 73+...

the existing bushings on my truck were plastic and pretty well shot. the holes were a little ovaled, but just a pinch, new bushings mad the door nice and tight, I am happy

Don’t use the hinge pin kit the suck and don’t last long. Save you a lot of trouble, just buy the new hinges. I got mine from www.Classicparts.com they cost $20 each and they last a long time and are so much tighter then the pin kit. The only different is the hinges take less time to install. So spend the money on the hinges.

The aftermarket pins/ bushings are bigger for a reason. Like mentioned above the factory bushings are plastic and once you wear through that you start wearing the hole in the hinge itself. You drill out the holes in the hinge to the size of the smallest bushing you can get away with and press it in.
