1970 gmc big block V6

hello i am new to this forum and am looking for sum info from people who might have been down the same road any help is greatly appreciated!! ! have a 1970 gmc with a 14 digit vin in it and can't find any thing on the vin #'s !! 2nd i want to take the 305 v6 out of it the truck has also a SM465 4 speed trans in it an i was wondering if i take the 6 out will a SB chevy 350 drop right in an bolt to the bell housing or would i have to get a different one !!! HELP PLEASE thanks!1

You will need a diffrent bell and diffrent motor mount stands. Tha diffrent bell will bolt to the transmission and to the crossmember Ok. Not sure about the clutch linkage,the z bar will most likely work but I dont know about the pivit ball on the motor. If you need parts for the conversion PM me I most likely have a lot of what you need. I never did the swap but had/have 67-72 trucks with the V6 and 350 v8's.

thanks for the info and greatly appreciate any and all the help i get the v6 actually runs really great it is that i just want a little more of a hot rod style !! what type of motor mount will work for the application ?? also the tranny is geared really low i like the idea of the muncie but if i have to change the bell housing i'm not sure about keeping it if i do i will probly have to change the rear gears ??

Welcome jonabalco!

It was my understanding that 1969 was the last year you could get the V-6 unless it was dealer installed. Is that the case with yours? Pictures please of the truck, engine and SPID in the glovebox. Give us the vin and let's work it through. Welcome!

i will work on getting the pics up but it is i believe a 1970 gmc short bed it has the 4 headlights. the vin is a 14 digit it is cm10dp327609 the truck as far as i can figure out thru research is a 305 v6 with a SM465 four speed muncie trans in it . i would thank you for any help u can give me

also music man 70 a little history it was my grand fathers brothers truck and it very well might be a 69 ! it was origanally a NJ public works truck left over it was bought by my great uncle as a left over and has 70k origonal miles on it and was always garage kept and actually runs great i got it when he died put a fuel pump and tune up ect. in it and it actually runs well it had some minor ruct in 1 cab corner and 1 rocker panel which has been replace the truck was also take apart and frame undercoated and the motor is next then paint !!

I hear what your saying about wanting to be a bit more hot rod style. I had/have that 305 in 3 diffrent trucks that I own and it was never a quick thing but once it got rolling it would tool down the road pretty good. I used to drive a 61 GMC 3500 that started off (with me) delivering cordwood and she would roll down the hiway 70 with a load on. One time I had her chained to something that wouldn't pull and that truck grabbed traction and stood up on the rear wheels. I swear that thing had the torqe to pull a house down. My 67 camper cruiser has that engine and I liked driving that just fine too it was a smooth running rig. It had really high rear end gearing,not sure about the ratio, but you actually could drive first gear on the road. If you took off in second it would struggle a bit sometimes as it was a little to high. I thought it was funny,You used the term big block V6 ,people would see that V6 when you were checking the oil at a gas station and think it was a big block V8.

If its not tired- throw a holley 500 and HID on it to wake it up some and drive it! The "M" in your vin is for the V6. They changed the GMC vins after 1967 so I cant decode it much other than its a 2wd, 1/2 ton, V6, and fleetside. I also read 1969 was the last year for the BB6.
