What has my 6.2 oil pump beeen chewing on???
Hey, guys. I'm doing a '66 Suburban build with a '82 6.2 Diesel intended to go under the hood. The guy I got this off of cleaned it and painted it (black - why black?) and put some new peripherals here and there before going to a different project. He said the rear main seal was weeping and I should fix it.
I got it on the stand, flipped it, pulled the pan and went towards the rear main. Since I was in the pan, I thought I'd check the oil pump. I pulled it apart, and the plate looks almost new. I almost just threw it back together and called it good, but since it was apart it was a great time to clean everything. Might as well get as much gunk as possible. When I pulled the gears, this is what I saw; what has my oil pump been chewing on? Looks like maybe wire or something? There is damage at contact points on both gears in several places. Should I be worried about something?

Ouch! Not sure what could have gone through there but those should probably be replaced. Hopefully the rest of the internals look a lot better than those. I would be motivated to pull a main cap and check out a bearing while I was in there.

Re: What has my 6.2 oil pump beeen chewing on???
Pulled a main, and it looks good. Still trying to figure out where the mystery metal came from. It would have had to be light enough to get picked up, and then how did it get through the screen? So far nothing obvious wrong with the engine. Even the rest of the oil pump shows no damage. Getting ready to pull the other main blocks I guess...
Oh, and any idea where to get just the gears? Hate to pay $65 for a whole new pump if I could get just the gears somewhere for cheap.

On a nicer note. The oil filter is the next stop so the junk prolly didn't go any further.
I agree with pulling a few bearing caps while it's upside down. |

Yes, I was praising the awesomeness of a $5 oil filter in comparison to the damage it likely saved to the engine. It caught the culprit piece AND the few chunks of gear tooth!
