Re: Project Rocky Mountain High

Since you have air, you can pick up an inexpensive (Home Depot, Lowes) die grinder and a carbide burr that will get you into those hard to reach areas. Looks like someone tried to fix that area before. The '65-'79 12 bolts were all 30 spline axles, but the '71-'79 ones were 5 lug and 1.5" wider. The posi units from either will fit, but you also need to make sure the one you get is correct for the gears you want to run. A carrier with 3.08 or 3.42 gears won't work with 3.73 or 4.11 gears and vice versa.

Re: Project Rocky Mountain High

Thanks Captianfab! I already have a die grinder. I'll look for one of those carbide burr bits. I think I used one of those at my buddy'd shop a number of years ago. Didn't think of that. As for the rearend, I remember reading something like that now about making sure it has the correct gears.

Another snow day today. We've got probably close to 16 inches of snow now. I'll post some pics when it gets light out. Pretty crazy! I'll probably get some work done on the truck also. I'm going to disassemble the rear of the truck today down to the frame. If I have time, I might bring in a couple of body panels and start to strip them also.

Re: Project Rocky Mountain High

Here's a couple pictures of the snow today. Have well over 24 inches. Our 15 month old Rotty is having a great time in the snow!

Re: Project Rocky Mountain High

Got some work on the truck done also. Pulled everything else off the back half of the frame. It's now ready to fix the crack. Too much snow or I would have went out to get the carbide bit that Captainfab recommended to get the old patch off the frame. I'm leaving the front end together for now until I can get that new radiator support/crossmember. Was thinking that it might not be a very good idea to pull the crossmember that the motormounts are hooked to yet until I replace the front. Don't want to have the frame bend or anything from the front of it being wide open.

Leaving to go elk hunting tomorrow so I won't have any updates until late next week or so. Should be fun walking around in all the snow.

Re: Project Rocky Mountain High

Seeing those pics sure makes me glad that I live in SoCal. It's a brutal 68 here but don't worry it will be back to 84 by Sunday.

Re: Project Rocky Mountain High

Ha, ha, ha! It's actually pretty mild here in Denver. We get these big storms but it'll be in the fifties for sure by the weekend. By monday most of this will be gone, which is nice. The bad thing is this big of a snow storm in October!
