Weather Stripping???

This might have been covered already but I just couldnt find anything in the search option...

This past weekend I replaced my cab to door rubber...now I`m having a hard time closing the door passanger and driver side. The rubber is new and very stiff which when it strikes the door on the hinge side it makes the door bounce back and for me to close it shut almost impossible. I adjusted the hinges and its a little easier now but still I have to slam it pretty hard.

My neighbor said its because the rubber is new and itll take some time to get worn in. Whats the truth behind that?

Yep, your old weatherstrip has had 25+ years to break-in.
I also adjusted the door striker out a little. Personally I'd rather a door a little out of line than rip off the armrest trying to close it.

Yeah my striker is all the way out...still a pia closing the doors with hinges and striker completely out...

So I'm assuming as the new rubber gets broken in I need to keep adjusting my striker and hinges correct?

Yea, I bet the kick panel vent door is closed too! If you are inside, roll down the window a bit then close the door. If you are outside, give it a good hard close!!! The cab is small and full of air. When the seals are replaced, the air can't escape fast enough!!

Yeah I had thought about the cab not being able to let the air escapes as fast as it should so now when I'm inside I roll the window down first, then close the door. It does close easier.

x2 - mine was like this too. I still roll the window down a bit while the passenger is getting in.

where are these vents in a 87? my doors are hard to shut because of the cab being air tight too!

In the lower panel of the door inner -where the louvers are.

So, I remove the door panel then what? look what position the louvers are in and if they're closed I should be able to open them?

Well, a couple comments:

a) The louvers are stationary; they are stamped steel in the inner and don't move.

b) There is a plastic and rubber contraption mounted behind the louvers, called the "PRV" (aka "pressure relief valve"). It mounts via the two screws located on either end of the louvers. Statically, the rubber flaps are "closed" and then when there is a puff of pressure (like when closing the door), or even long steady increases of pressure (like when the heater blower is on high) they blow open, allowing the pressure to release.

You can leave the rubber/plastic prv out, which might help with door closing effort, but you risk having a cool breeze all the rest of the time.

Get a cheap Harbor Freight heat gun, use it to get the rubber hot and soft, then slam the door TIGHT and let sit overnight. This won't remove all the "bounce", but will help to get it into the correct shape and will still be weathertight.

Now for my quick question in the same area: I have an '85 dually, all that's bad is the outer felt strips along the bottom of the window opening. Where can I find good ones?

I don't know if it is just the 73-80 but I have vents on the back of the door also, where the striker is.

Guys, I also was looking around for vents and found one on the passenger side kick panel on my which is an 87. I can push it with my hand and open it so I guess theres no issue with it but just a thought you can check that one too.

Mine, too - but I was addressing the PRV question specifically. The PRV is in the bottom portion of the door; the rear louvers are open to atmosphere.

Here's my story about that dumb rubbery thing -

But when I went to put the driver's door together - I was getting ready to put the driver's door panel back on and my (10 year old) daughter walked up and said "...daddy, are you forgetting anything?"

I stopped for a second and said "yes, honey - I sure am".

Sure enough, in spite of my notes, I almost put the door together without reinstalling that pressure valve.



Fortunately she happened to walk up at just the right instant....







...she got an ice cream cone out of that deal.

where exactly or what does the prv look like? if its behind the louvers how to you get to it?

you have to pull door panel off...unless someone cut a big ol hole in door for speaker you might get to it that way

also if you have pwr door locks and windows you may have a plastic clip atached to the prv that hold some of the wires running through the door . the plastic holder will open to release the wires, dont try to remove the cilp from prv

looks like more like a filter lol how to tell if thats the problem with my doors being hard to shut? look like its just flaps I don't see how that could be my problem but wit hthe vindow cracked my doors shut perfect and easy.

Are the doors hard to shut with the windows down? If not, its definately having to do with the air in the cab not escaping fast enough. I have that problem in mine. They're a little hard to shut with both windows up, but with the one or both windows open, it bout clicks shut.

yep thats mine too mine click shut easy with a window cracked but windows up hard as hell to shut.
