When Did Flasher Switch Become Standard? Mid 1966?
I was going through the parts boxes for Goldilocks and noticed that I don't have an emergency flasher switch for her. I checked the bottom edge of the dash and no holes have ever been drilled to mount a switch. I thought that four way flashers became standard equiptment in '66, but that must have been calendar year and not model year? My '66 was delivered to the dealership december 16th 1965, so that supports my model/calendar year theory? Anyone know for sure when the switches became standard equiptment? The vin is C14464A119848 if that helps date it better.
I pulled this switch from my '66 parts truck but the vin tag is gone so I can't date that cab. Posted via Mobile Device

Im not about being standard, but I know they were an option on the earlier trucks. My 63 came with one. My guess would be around 70-72 when they started getting tighter on emissions and safety standards (seat belts).

I know that 1966 is when federal DOT required that seat belts and backup lights become standard equipment on all manufactured vehicles from then on out but not sure about 4 way flashers but that does sound like something that would fall into that category

As far as I know, factory-installed emergency flashers didn't arrive until 1967, and then, it was a pull switch on the steering column. Up to that point, it was an option, and it was usually the Flarestat 105.

Was standard on 67 cars.

The significant safety upgrades in the auto industry began in 1967
with standard hazard flashers, collapsible steering columns and also dual circuit master cylinders. The next year, 1968, followed up with key-in-ignition buzzers and front and rear side marker lights. These standards were for cars. I think trucks for the most part followed suit. |

Thanks guys. I've always been into VW's and they started coming with flashers from the factory for the '66 model year, so that's why I was thinking '66 was the first year they were required. I guess I'll leave them off Gloldilocks since they weren't on there originally. Good info on here!!
