One piece window issues
I bought these in December 2010 but haven't gotten around to working on them until now. Install wasn't that bad, but now I'm seeing some issues. First, the glass doesn't really fit the opening that well. I have it adjusted so there's about a 1/4" of glass in the rear track/frame when up, but this leaves a gap at the front. I get why, as it barely clears the front of the door when rolled down. There are foam spacers in the kit that space the weatherstrip out to "fix" this, but in my opinion it looks like crap. You then have big chunk of the weatherstrip showing. Anyone else ran into this? IF I decide to keep these I'll probably reshape that area of the door to look better (bring the curve back) or mount a mirror over the area. The other thing is the rear track mount at the back edge of the door. The kit includes a bracket to change the angle of the track. This causes the rear mounting bolt to be crooked, see the last pic. Fixing that will require modifying the track to match the door at the new angle. It isn't even mentioned in the directions.

This is the One Piece Products kit. It has the front track, which I believe is the latest version.

Re: One piece window issues
I have the exact same issue with my kit, all you can do is space out the channel felt like the instructions say or modify the door metal. I got mine in and they look good and fit well so I never roll them down don't want to have any issues.

Re: One piece window issues
So in other words, this wouldn't look good on my truck (Painted already and metal shaping mods are totally out of the question), and they aren't as reliable as the stock window setup?
I wanted to get the one piece kit but worry about my truck paint already being done, and it ABSOLUTELY has to work as reliably as the stock setup. Everytime I get in I at least roll the window down a couple of inches. And roll them all the way up and down quite regularly. For me to get it, it must be something I put together and then forget about it, like stock. |

Re: One piece window issues
That's a lot of money for something that doesn't fit properly, then have to worry about rolling down ?
My vents look just fine.... ![]()

Re: One piece window issues
Sounds like OPP needs to do some MAJOR re-engineering to this kit if they wanna keep selling it.

Re: One piece window issues
in my opinion these window kits are a good place to start but that is all. as with anything after market it only has to be close.

Are people having major wind noise issues with the vents and new weather stripping, or is this a purely aesthetic mod?

Re: One piece window issues
My problems with vent windows is that After 3 years they already started whistling again. And the last one I did was such a pain that I'll just seal them up before I do that job again.
When I do use the vents, after closing them, I have to fiddle with them to make the whistling quieter. Other than that the seals are tip top, They're just getting squashed after being closed for 2 or 3 years. And my large side windows don't whistle at all. And I do like the way the one piece windows look, and I won't have to reach around the vent window divider bar to ash out the window with my long arms. Gives it a little bit of an updated look. I'm right now at the point I already have the black RTV sealer to seal the vents up, just haven't gotten to it yet. But if I do seal them up somebody (maybe me) will absent mindedly try to open the sealed vent and end up shoving the handle and most of the glass right out of the hole onto the freeway... again. ![]() |

Re: One piece window issues
I seem to remember my Gramps' 85 being dead silent on the highway when it was a couple years old, but I was just a young kid so I might just not have noticed it. From messing with my K5, those latches and how tight they fit have a lot to do with how quiet those windows are. The pad they clamp down on seems to be a sacrificial part, I wonder if something solid there would work better? or maybe take it off, straighten it out, and fill it with epoxy...

Re: One piece window issues
I've returned 95% of the aftermarket stuff I've bought for my truck... Needless to say, now I'm gunshy regarding ANYTHING not factory (or built by me) for these trucks

Re: One piece window issues
You lucked up on non whistling vents. My original ones whistled like crazy and this was on a 80k mile truck that was always garaged.

Re: One piece window issues
ay ay ay... Right now Im glad I did not spend $$$ on these, I was so close to ordering a kit. I guess the glass is so big that they had to trim the angles of it to make it fit inside the door, and thatīs why you get a gap when itīs rolled up. I feel for you man, itīs not fun when you fork out for something that doeīs not fit in the end.

Re: One piece window issues
I dont want to give the impression they are not a good product the quality of the product is very good I think it all depends on the installer and the version of kit you get. I have a buddy who has a very recent kit and his windows are crank and not power and his works great he rolls them up and down all the time no issues and no gap at the front edge of the window he did use the spacer as discribed in the instalation instructions. I also know the guys down at Hills Hot Rods install them quite a bit and always have good results. I think the more times you install a kit the better the final results will be. That being said you can call Ben the owner of One Piece Products on the phone and he will spend as much time as you want talking you through the install. If I lived near Ben I would have let him install my kit for me.

Re: One piece window issues
My kit fits a lot better that that. and I have no problem rolling mine up and down..
I also added power... I'm happy with my kit, but I wouldn't be happy with the fit your getting either.. I got mine about 4 months ago.. maybe there a little different these days??

Re: One piece window issues
any of you guys got dumbo mirrors you're using with this kit? the other worry I have is losing the supports that tie the inner shell to the outer skin under the mirror with this kit, and having those big ol mirrors on the door.

Re: One piece window issues
In my mind, I'm thinking that tinting the windows and painting the vent window bar gloss black would, from 20 feet, give you the same look.

sumran (Randy) had the one piece glass installed with dumbo's, They had to reposition them on the door and modify the inner mounts or something that I don't remember. Shoot him a PM and he'll get a email notice to chime in with more details.....
