1982 Parking Brake Question

I bought this 82 Sierra 3500 with the parking brake assembly not working, it wouldn't stay engaged. With a ton of oiling, it now stays engaged, but I don't have a brake light coming on when it is engaged. There is a brown wire that looks like it is supposed to trip the light on when it is engaged, but I don't see anything to attach it to, there's no switch or anything like that, just the parking brake assembly. Is there supposed to be a switch on the assembly? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 1982 Parking Brake Question

There should be a small black switch on the assembly, with a small tab, that the wire connects to.Test the light,by touching the wire to ground(ignition on)momentarily. If there's no light on,check the bulb,in the cluster.

This..
Other way to check the bulb, turn the key to "on" all your dash lights should light, even the 'brake" light.

J Knight, You should... even my '73 had one. IIRC it also is a warning light for pressure loss in the system and is triggered off of the proportioning valve.

OK read motornut's reply, maybe not all of them had it.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Before I put my tach in my brake light stayed on all the time but I coudnt figure out why, I looked on my e-brake assy but the switch is not on it. Didnt see a place for it either.

Re: 1982 Parking Brake Question

Hey thanks for the replies guys! This is such a great board!

Yeah, I went to the garage this morning, and took a closer look at that assembly. I don't even see where the darn thing would attach to the assembly.

I even tested that wire and got nothing when I grounded it, so it may also have a bad bulb.

I figure that if it comes down to it, I could probably just mount my own switch to get it to kick on.
