Could have burnt truck to the ground!

I took my 72 Cheyenne to pick up some material for a project last weekend, and stopped for some gas. On the way home the smell of gas in the cab seemed to be stronger than normal. (going to relocate the tank to the rear, just haven't had time yet) Well by the time that I made it home I had decided that it was time that I better make time or quit driving the truck. I mean this gas smell was getting bad! So I park, get out and walk around the front of the truck and the smell gets worse. So I say to myself "self that ain't right". So I open the hood to see that most of the engine compartment is dripping with gas!! The short rubber fuel line to the external filter downstream of the pump has a split in it!! (only about 6 to 8 months old) The moral of this story is, When something seems wrong to you, trust yourself! I was very lucky, this could have ended in a very bad way, the least of which could have been me looking for a new truck to build, and the rest I don't want to think about.

dude glad you are OK. The truck is ok as well, I just took a holly carb off the burb we just got and it was spitting out fuel like a fire hose, I am glad I change it out.

when I was like 10 i was riding in the back of moms vw bug and I told her it was smoking and she said it was normal (sp) But I made her pull over, I told her if she did not pull over I was going out the window !! The thing burned to the ground right there. It was cool to watch, but it was sad to loose the bug... trusting your self is the best way to go. :p

Glad you're OK. Was the rubber line rated for fuel? Not all kinds are.

The smell of gas in the cab shouldn't be 'normal'. I was getting the gas smell in the cab, because my cap wasn't sealing correctly - gas would trickle out when I made a right turn... After I fixed the cap problem, no more smell...

And it does sound like the hose yuo used wasn't made to be used as a fuel line...

I'm glad you were able to catch the problem before it flamed up!

Good idea to change the short hose under the cab from the fuel tank to the hard line too. I went out one morning and my truck was sitting in a puddle. It had not rained. You guessed it - the puddle was gasoline. The hose under the cab let go and the whole contents of the tank drained out onto the pavement. Glad no one tossed a butt while going by my truck. It might has caused some excitement on our street.

Wow...your lucky! You proably have a friend upstairs

Always check your rubber fuel lines every time you pop the hood....i replace mind whenever i see small splits starting to appear in them. Line is cheap and it is good insurance

I would think that it was rated for fuel as it was included with the fuel filter. Understand that gas smell is not normal in cab, but it is somewhat common for our trucks, an indication that something needs to be replaced. This was my situation, gas smell in cab, and sometimes worse after putting gas in truck. This is an easy trap to assume that nothing else is wrong. If it doesn't seem right, it probably isn't. If you have gas smell in cab, don't wait to fix it. This situation could become very bad in a hurry. I was very lucky.

I agree!! Glad your OK.
I think we all act like Super Man, and expect that nothing bad can happen to us, then you have a close call, and it brings it all into perspective.

Yeah the smell of gas is something I always associate with old trucks. I have recently discovered that while taking sharp right turns, my gas cap leaks...or should I say spews....gas out. Time for a new cap.
