Looks like a first aid or roadside emergency kit to me.Could have been put on by the state or a RR among others.Maybe just a convenient place for a PO to put it.

I've never seen a metal box screwed to a door right there before. But,people did whatever suited them. I used to mount a fire extinguisher to the passenger side kick panel...for practical reasons,but also because I thought it was a cool touch. I also always mounted a Kel-Light (became Magnalight later) to the bottom of the dash and a gun rack over the back window,too. My first aid kit was always under the passenger seat.

it looks like even the bolts are painted, as if it was from the factory..same kinda paint wear on it and everything..cool piece!
