402BBC Good motor?

How well does the 402 perform. I tried looking at some stroker kits online but i'm not too familiar with pushrod performance. I got a 79 chevy with 39.5" tall tires and came across one for sale from oilpan to air cleaner for 400$(canadian)

What do you guys think?

402 is basically a bored 396. Any big block can be a good motor, just depends on how its built and what its used for. Not sure of canadian currency, but $400 us dollars for a running motor is a good deal. With your big tires and weight you will like the torque of the bigblock.

It can be....or you can save yourself the hassle and buy a 454.

Well, boring/stroking a 402 would be more expensive than getting a 454.

The engine that is known as a "402",actually served many engines. It started as the 400bbc,for trucks, then, the396/409,and recently,the402/502.It is a highly modifiable engine, and performs well, when set up properly.

The 396/402 uses the same stroke crank as the 427 but has a smaller bore. The 402 is a great all around motor but if you are looking for more power beyond head and cam upgrades, you are better off going with a 454 money wise as parts are more common.

If you are chronologically listing these motors. The 409 was 1962-65, then the 396 from 65-70ish. The 402 if I'm not mistaken was derived from old 396 blocks that didn't clean up, so they were bored .30 over and became a 402, they were 1970-74? Then the 454 and then the 502. The 402 can be a great motor with good heads and a cam and some compression.

The 409 is a completely different animal and shouldn't be included in this group...

I have to agree the 348 and 409 are totally different, and although they can be referred to as big blocks the "W" motors probably should be separated from this group. Good point.
