Rear tank side or bed fill?

I've got enough $ to get in on the Boyd's GB this week on the tank for my 72, but I don't know if I should use bed fill or side? How does the side one work? I know the bed fill is pretty self explanatory.
Thanks.

Re: Rear tank side or bed fill?

Bed sides work welll too, just more work. Two common ways are,

1 Behgine the side marker light/reflector...It works, but is tight. If the stations in main have those big tubes over the pump nozels, it may not be the way to go.

2. Add a fuel door filler to the side. I put a fuel dioor fro an 88-98 C1500 into the side of my truck's old bed. Works good, but just a lof of work to make it look llike it belongs.

Another option, like HuggerCST did, is fix up your fuel tube behide your taillight. It works good, but again a lot of work.

Quickest and easiest is in the bed floor.

Re: Rear tank side or bed fill?

lol, brad. I had to pay some bills last month (oil bill $800.00 for 200 gallons!!!!) but i have enough to get the tank, sender, and some lines from Inline tube for the brakes. Then i'm tapped out again! lol

Thanks Palf70step. I don't have the ability or tools to go that route, so bed floor it is. lol

I see you made up your mind but here is my thinking.
I use my truck as a truck. I have a Blazer tank. When I finally get around to installing it I can't imagine putting the filler in the bed because I use the bed and may have stuff in there when I need gas.

If I had a nice looking, not used as a truck truck, I'd do the bed floor or somewhere in the inside of the bed side. The reason there is I would want the cleanest looking outside of the truck.

My opinions are worth what you just paid for them.

Re: Rear tank side or bed fill?

Opinions are why i post it. I get so many ideas, its always super helpful. And i thank you for posting.
I will use my truck very little as a truck. Might haul a few small boats here and there for the shop, but i doubt i'll haul much. I have seen lots of bed fills with nice covers over them. And it is recessed enought to not be sticking up through. I'm guessing the BOYDS tanks dont stick up through the bed floor on metal floors. But i'm going to ask first.
I am not a fan of the 88-98 side door fills on these trucks, i just don't think it fits. MY $.02 anyway.

Re: Rear tank side or bed fill?

I probably have no idea what I'm talking about......but how hard would it be to put the fill behind the license plate like on older cars?

I think 67slider did it on his truck with a 69 camaro gas tank.

I had forgotten he did it and that could be a very viable option.

Re: Rear tank side or bed fill?

I am going with the bed fill option. The tank is installed and I will be mimicking what Foose did (pic) on the overhaulin build. This is next on my build once the driver side rocker is done. I am with you, this spot is much easier to fabricate, and it is very close to the rear of the bed, so I don't see it being a problem getting access to at the pumps.

I am from Kennebunk, but now live in New Jersey. I think you are little further down Maine, correct?
