1962 c 80 chevy 409 10,600 orignal miles! Questions
Lots of Lurking, First post. I love some of the stuff I am seeing on this forum. Just a few days ago a friend and I purchased a 1962 American Lefrance c 80 Fire truck 409,5 speed with 2 speed and PTO with 10,600 miles. These are the actual miles on the truck!!! It was taken out of service only 2 weeks ago. The sticker is only one month old! The pump is even still tested and approved for use. We were thinking the 409 would be a good motor for a sleeper street truck. But after doing a little research Here it seems many of the parts would cross over to c10 as well. So the question. What parts will work, and is there a list some where. Thanks for any info.
P.S. I will try to post up some pics soon. |

Re: 1962 c 80 chevy 409 10,600 orignal miles! Questions
Welcome to the forum. The engine will bolt in whatever you want. The trans will depend on what kind of trans it is. Alot of the cab parts and components are interchangeable. I dont know of any lists, but if you can list what you'd like to put on a c-10...im sure that there are enough people here to help. Most of the brakes and rear end parts, and front suspension will most likely not work. Any pics would help and would be great. The 409 and 348 were great engines...nice find.

With that history on the truck, I'd leave that baby just as it is. W engines aren't that hard to find.

Beautiful Truck.
Wondering if you could check on something for me. I'm curious if it has the regular Torsion Bar Front Suspension or does it have a Straight Front Axel with Leaf Springs? Bill

When I was under the truck checking it out I saw an A frame style independent front end. And it rides down the road pretty sweet to. But the manual steering sucks.

Thanks. On the Manual Steering, make sure the Tire Pressure is fully up and it check to see if it has a Filler Plug on the Steering Box. If it does, make sure it is full. Bill

Leave that baby exactly as it is right now, what a beauty. It'd be a real shame to mess that one up.

I'd loose the bed, throw a long bed on her, shorten the wheel base and drive the crap out of her! Basically Delmo-I've it

Re: 1962 c 80 chevy 409 10,600 orignal miles! Questions
This truck was purchased as a resale project, the plan was to scrap the rear body and 750 gal rear tank and pump. Sell the truck, as a whole or as parts. and keep the motor. But it seems there might be some reasons to sell this as a whole package. I would talk to my buddy and see what his thoughts are. I have very limited time for shows or meets but this truck would sure take some ribbons. Thanks for all the nice comments.

Re: 1962 c 80 chevy 409 10,600 orignal miles! Questions
If your plans are not to keep it, you may make a decent profit by re-selling the whole truck. If you decide to keep the truck and not the Bed and Tank, before you attempt to scrap it, check with some Fire Truck people (online sites, clubs, etc). You may get a better price than scrap. It does look like it is in pretty nice condition. I myself, would probably keep it as a Fire Truck, but my second choice would probably be to sell the Bed and use the truck as a Rollback.
I bet there are some on here with thoughts of pulling up to a car show with their fully restored '62 C-10 being carried on that real nice '62 C-80! Bill

Tke it to Sturgis and have a wet t-shirt contest. Just kidding. I'd leave all there and drive it in parades. Great find

Re: 1962 c 80 chevy 409 10,600 orignal miles! Questions
I second the parade idea. Nothing like offering it to a bunch of 18 year old cheerleaders and getting them to ride the hose truck.
Sorry to hear that you didn't get it to keep it. If you want a cut-it-up project maybe something in the 1980's might be a better choice. Lots of those around and you won't be destroying history. |
