If you can afford it, get it! MIG is good, TIG is outstanding! The 180 might be a bit small for big aluminum. Our 210 has reached it's limit a time or two, but for steel, 180 will be quite enough.
Oh, a bottle of helium will enable you to do hotter aluminum welds too.

Re: Miller Sycrowave 180 SD ..... Thoughts ??
i doubt you could get a good weld on 1/4 AL. i generally am to lazy to swap to my heavy torch for 1/4 AL. my small flex torch is rated for 225 amps and it is painfully slow and irritating at 220. at 180 im not sure you would be able to puddle the material. maybe if you did a really warm preheat and had someone hold the torch on the part as you welded also. i think my hands would melt off waiting for it though.
that being said, i would snatch it up if the price was good. i have almost no need to weld that kind of AL at home. |

Re: Miller Sycrowave 180 SD ..... Thoughts ??
i Tig almost all the time at work. it is fantastic, but for most of what i do in the garage Mig is king. i plan on getting a machine like the one in question for my garage whenever it pops up. for fine work you cant beat it.
if you can get it for less than 1500 i would say its a good deal. esp. if it comes with a good torch and foot control and ground lead. |

Re: Miller Sycrowave 180 SD ..... Thoughts ??
I have a Sycrowave 200 in my shop darn good machine. the 200 running wide open will do 1/4" aluminum.
the 180 will be limited to say aluminum boat gauge thickness. |

No doubt MIG is King for most ...
I've been using MIG for two decades and weld exhaust, body panels and build custom oil pans, and never have I changed out the .035 But, I still would like to get my hands on one ... Thanks guys ...

Big for me is 4X4 blocks. Filling through holes for internal passages. Pre-heat is the key for thick plate. And clean clean clean. You have to scratch the skin off with a stainless steel brush just before weld. Really makes a difference.
