wanting to put a dana 70 rear end in...

hey guys. I was thinking about putting in a dana 70 dually rear end with disc brakes on my k3500 frame while doing the cab swap. How do I go looking for one? What am I supposed to look for? I have a chevy 14 single rear now. My goal is to go dually but either way the 14 doesnt have long enough inner axles shafts. I DO have a rear dually for parts but its a cab and chassis dually rear, which is shorter. Or should i go and look for a disc brake conversion and would finding dually inner axle shafts work with my exisiting rear?

Re: wanting to put a dana 70 rear end in...

I am not sure if you mean cab& chassis when you say frame, but I am in the process of converting a dually to single that has a box.I swapped out a dana 70 for a 14 bolt and had to change spring hangers because the 14's spring perches were about an 1" too wide. The 14 is a single wheel version also.I probably could have moved perches too,but the old hangers had elongated holes so that's why I went that route.IMO (others might disagree) the 14 is probably lots heavy enough for most 1 ton apps in a truck of that vintage anyway.....The reason I did the swap was the 70 had 4:56 gears and the 14 has 3:42, this is in a 6.2 and I am looking for some mileage,if I need to tow something I have Dodge with a 5.9.

oh ok, I have 2 trucks. One is a 1980 cab and chassis donor, and a 1986 K3500 gmc high sierra frame, which will recieve the cab clip and engine and stock wheels from the donor, also wanting to make it dually. Sounds like it may be too much to deal with. Maybe I will look for the inner axles then

Well this is too funny. I am thinning out the built up parts around my house trying to get free up space and was thinking of selling mine. I have 1 from a mid 80's chevy 1 ton dump. No idea of miles or anything. Would need to be gone through. I have no idea of what it's worth either.

Just buy 2.5" wheel spacers and use your current axle. A single wheel 14 bolt is 67" and a Dana 70 is 72". It is easy to swap disc brakes onto a 14 bolt and brackets can be had for $65 shipped to your door.
