1968 chevy c10 non powere steering column
My steering column broke park is straight up towards the roof of the cab (automatic) I canbarely go into drive its where 2nd should be my friend is a mechanic and said there's a spring or smething that's holds the column in place its in side the column its self idk if anyones knows what I'm talkin about or how t fix it but does anyone knw where I can get a new column? Thanks matt

It sounds like the linkage between the frame and transmission has come loose. Look under the truck and see if everything is in line. The column uses a tube that shifts the linkage. If there is that much travel it has to be something else. Hope this helps.

That's what I thought so I did that but the column its self is moving like rotating to the left towards park like if I were to slam it in park the column moves to the left and if I were to put it in 2nd it moves it t the right but steering wheel itself doesn't mve it'll stay ? Any thoughts n that?

Maybe one of the two clamps came loose? You can look for a replacement column on the parts section of the website. There are usually a few there at any given time.

The retaining ring under the hood at the firewall "and" the u-clamp under the dash must be loose,allowing the entire housing to rotate. There is just not that much travel within the column itself to allow what you describe. As far as not going into all the gears,once the column is in the correct position,there is a linkage rod the connects the column shifting mechanism to the transmission linkage. There is a barrel bolt off the column's shift arm that clamps that rod in and is your linkage adjustment. Generally,you will either get no "park" or no "low" depending on which way it's out of adjustment.
See the shifting arm and barrel bolt in the picture?
