So thats what its called! I had a government work truck that had this problem from the day it was new. A 2006 Dodge 2500 quad cab 4x4. I would turn it in and try to explain to the dealer what was happening and they would check the frontend for bent tierods and such but were never able to fix it. I hated that damn truck! It would usually happen at about 60-70 mph and hitting the smallest bump in the road would set it off. Happened once while passing a semi on the interstate and I thought I was gonna see Jesus.
Better days now, It's been replaced with a F250. |

D60s have had this problem forever and D44's and 10 bolts also have the problem although in my opinion there much less susceptible anywhoms the king pins are not always the problems I've researched it because i also have it and it has been everything from big bias ply tires to a bad steering stabilizer to a bent brake rotor apparently, there is way too many possibilities but obviously the main one is the king pins themselves you could try replacing them but its a real 'fun' job assuming you either have an impact strong enough or a breaker bar big enough but if your gonna do the king pins might as well do the whole thing just in case
4wdfactory sells the two tools to get the king pins out which are actually really big allens they sell a socket/allen for a break bar or impact or i think the other one is a actual allen key itself My first suggestion is if your running big bias ply tires that are unbalanced get them balanced if they're too big as for the semi truck beads any decent tire place should know of them or you could throw air soft gun bb's in the tires although the semi ones are much smaller and get into better spots creating a better balance, or you could swap tires to a radial as a test to see if your tires are the problems, or have an alignment place check your alignment and give you the read out and specs of your front end like i did

Thanks 250r. IIRC when I did my king pins a few years ago I used a lug nut in the pin. It fits upside down inside it, I ran a stud into the lug then jam nutted it so I could use a 3/4" breaker bar and cheater pipe. Had to heat the pins up too. 600 ft/lbs iir.
