Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

OK....fabbing a rear bumper/tire carrier for my build and I'm looking for ideas on "extras" such as jacks, gas cans, baskets etc.....

Any photos?

Re: Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

I mounted my jack using two large wingnuts to welded on bolts.

My "latch" is a simple Eyebolt. Works well and keep the gate nice and tight to the bumper. See the little footpad I welded under the gate, the bolt passes thru.

Re: Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

Cool Blazer....looks like you are aired down and rolling.

That's along the lines of what I'm looking for but I think I'll drop the tire down lower to get it out of the way so I can look back easier.

I had a recess put in the bumper for the license plate but I am going to use that to drop the tire and put the license plate on the tire itself.

LOVE the beer opener (suppose it could be for pops....but I'm thinking beer)

I gotta get me one of those for sure.

Re: Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

BEER ummmm BEER..it's not uncommon to wake up in the am at camp and find a pile of bottle caps laying on the ground hehhe
Ya the tire does sit right in my rear view mirror but I wanted it that way..sacraficed the view for rear approch angle clearance.
I have seen some guys put the tire to one side or the other. I don't drive much on the street anymore so no biggy fer me. Oh and ya the tires have about 8psi in them in that pic..

Happy Friday!!

Re: Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

I thought I would chime in as someone who has one, and plans to build a new improved one. Here is my current one.

Not a great shot of the carrier but it's what I have.

My thoughts
1 it's really long, it sticks out way into the lane in parking lots when opening the tailgate.
2 When the gas/water cans are full that is a lot of weight counter balanced out there when open and also a fair amount of torsion on the gate even when closed as the tire and cans want to roll out and down. In the photo you can see that I have it braced up at camp so that it doesn't sit there putting constant strain on the hinge while in camp.
3 Mine is secured with a pad lock, kind of a pain.
4 Visibility is fine, mine is mounted fairly low, but does not effect departure angle.
5 the square tube build is not very attractive, I get lots of "why don't you have bumper" comments. I thought it weird but actually it does look like their is a bumper missing.

Improvements.
1 double swing. Tire one side and fuel other. Lessening the amount of leverage applied to the hinge. Also with the tire to one side, reaching over the tailgate becomes much easier as you are not reaching over and around the tire just to access through the hatch. this of course during normal driving without the fuel can gate installed (see #2)
2 removable easily, I have not figured out just how yet, but I want to yank the fuel gate when not in use and also be able to lose the tire gate to haul oversize items with the tailgate down.
3 Better latch system that does not rely on padlock for redundancy.

Just things to keep in mind. I thought it might help as I really have a love/hate relationship with my gate.

Re: Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

Thanks for all the input, it will help in the fabbing of mine.

Still think to keep the tire centered just because I like the look better.

Not figuring to put any spare gas cans, I put a 37 gallon tank in it when I built it and I can always throw a couple of the metal OSHA approved cans in the back, (they don't leak at all) if there comes a time when I need them.

I'm not really even considering mounting a jack on it because I think a bottle jack will be all I need for that thing since it's basically gonna be a concrete queen for quite a few years.....but that option is still one that I'm considering pretty hard.

Otherwise, just a basic tire carrier with a 4-way mounted on the back of the tire (I hate using a socket to change a tire).

but....until I get it built I keep changing my mind ;-)

Re: Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

Mine is very similar to Alaskamatts. This is an old Kayline unit that I bought from another member. Since I mainly do trail riding it is stout enough.

Re: Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

Bumping this to see if anyone's got any new carriers. I'll be building one in the next year or so for my cross country trip.

Re: Rear Bumper Tire Carriers

I finally did mine. Here is a shot, but it's hard to see what all is going on.

Here is a link the build thread.
