7 grand wholeshot???

Is the exhaust plugged? I had a friend plug the exhaust on an 89 dodge I used to have, and it would idle fine, (about as fine as a Dodge can, anyway) but as soon as I put it in gear it died.

When I went from a manual tranny to the automatic, I ended up replacing the cam. I had a Crane Blazer cam in it, I think it had about 272 duration and had a good loping idle that I loved. But, after I put the TH350 in, I had to set the idle up to almost 1600 so it wouldn't kill at every stop. I could have replaced the torque converter, but I recammed it to a milder profile and put in rhodes lifters. It runs great and I still have pretty good mid range and top end power, but dam I miss that loping idle.

Try setting the idle higher (approx 1000 - 1200 rpm), then drop it into gear. At this point lower RPM down, if you need to to get a decent idle when it's in gear. Make sure you block the wheels, and parking brake is on when you do this. You'll have to open and close the throttle a couple of times to get it to settle in.

With the higher duration camshaft, you probably wont be able to maintain the stock idle settings....

with that big of a cam you have to run a stall verter or the thing will never run right. because if you do idle it up higher you gonna have trouble just sitting at a light because the truck is gonna want to keep jumping forward. go get yourself a tci 2500 stall convertor they run about 250 bucks and you problem will be gone

As a general rule anything above 270 duration has to have a stall converter. You need to check out what gear you have because if you run a stall coverter with "highway" gears the converter will never get out of it's stall range and burn up in no time...but will do some impessive burnouts at any speed. [Don't ask me how I know that...lol]

I would call all the major converter manufacturers and tell them your motor specs, trans, gears etc and let them tell you what would be best for you application.

Check the vacuum at idle if it is low and steady look for timng/vacuum leaks if it is real bouncy its the cam and you can take the idle up to about 850 in drive more than that you start to burn things in the trany at idle. You could have an open port or cracked vacuum line and cause the same condition. just a thought.
