We are all just trying to help. My concern is not the peanut port heads. It's the fact that the cam is way too big even if it had 049's or 781's. A good deal is only relative to what you get in performance. Not trying to crap in your backyard. Just throwing out that now would be a good time to get the right cam in there before it's in and you are disappointed with how sluggish it is around town.

No offense taken and I appreciate all the help I can get but even if I swap the cam Im in this motor for around $2200 not bad I dont think..I will get the head casting numbers and do you know if lunati puts the cam numbers on the end if so I can pull the timing chain and get those to..right?

Thanks for PM-ing me. I want to reply back here those so others can possibly catch something if I miss it. Before you go too far with a new cam idea, You really need to find out EXACTLY what you have! Where did you get this fresh motor from? Can they really give you the nitty gritty on it? In order to run that big of a cam, there should be new springs/retainers/locks matching that change in lift/duration from what would have come in that motor stock. The grind number will more than likely be on the end of that cam but I'm almost positive you will have to remove the cam sprocket to get at the number. You need to pull the covers and see what the head casting numbers are and it would probably be a good time to take some really clear pics and post them. Can't emphasize how helpful it would be to know exactly what is in that thing. You want to make sure if you step down in cam size that you have the right spring seat/open pressures for the different cam. Then you get into push rod lengths and oh boy........ Best thing to do is to really find out how this motor was built, what is the true compression...etc. Just where did this dude come from? As far as the trans, it really needs to be seriously tough to last behind a high torque BBC. Stall only needs to be a bump over stock. Maybe in the 2,200 range. |

Ok I will get pics and post them and I have an edlebrock 600 cfm thats on my sbc now will this work on the bb or should I look at a different carb?

Once again.....depends on just what is really in that thing. It will certainly work on it no question. If there was to be an issue, it would only be in the upper rpms.

hay James can i have some free Gas.it sounds like you own one of the big oil company's or you know Gorge Bush.I'm just teasing ya.Man I know a lot of guys that have 502 in there trucks and hot rods and not many of them say anything thing good about the big block now days.I have over 5 of them and I've had to pull each one of them out do to i work them to hard or they only last 90,000.my friend has a 427 in 1967 camaro that and he's in need of a over haul it has 181,000 miles on it from the power tour and it bro9ke down on him once lost the oil pump and now it has blow by and the umbrellas are bleeding by big cloud of smoke in the morning all big blocks have that problem in GM.
I've replace almost all mine with crate 350 290 Hp engines I don't need the big sound i wont long jevity 15-25 years it i can get it the 350 was the best engine that GM ever built other then the DZ 302 But for long lasting and a engine that can take a beating the 350 290 hp engine was it for me |

Theres good points and bad to every motor. Jason is asking for advise on the engine not opinions. For example i too have owned one of the 350/290 hp Mexican made gmpp crate motors. Within less than 1000 miles it started smoking. Through my research i found there was a quality control issue with them where 3.4L valve seals were used. I had to replace the seals... i have pics.
Things to consider, yes ... but momma said if you aint got nothing nice to say, just keep quiet. Lets help him make this motor everything he wants it to be, not make him feel like theres nothing good to say about a big block? Cmon Hes not building a 7k rpm motor here. ......and when gas goes over $5.00 a gal, I'll still be driving my big blocks. None are in my daily driver so I really don't care about MPG. That's what my little sissy 99 Camry is for! lol

Same here I'm not worried about mpg or I would be over on the honda forum this will be a Sat. night cruiser to town and back or a little red light to red light action!..Is there a brand of stall (2200) I should or shouldn't buy?

Stalls are going to be sold in "ranges" because they flash differently behind different motors. With the same converter in a TH350, a sbc will not get as high of a stall as behind a bbc. I am really happy with Hughes 'verters.

From what I can tell that cam is in the 1200-5000 RPM (per the Lunati website) I'd say maybe a 2200-2800 stall and 3:73 pt. I had a TCI 'Streetfighter' behind a pretty hot LT1 / TH350 years ago and it was perfect.
Big Block iron heads are cheap .. Jason if you need or want to change heads it's not a huge deal. .. let's see what you've got first. The casting numbers will tell us a lot. 'Stock' LS6 heads? (70 Chevelle?) or 'Stock' the ones that came on your motor .. That's my curiosity.
