Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

Hey guys, have a couple questions for anyone that has done this swap or has knowledge of doing it. I bought a 69 camero gas tank. have the wire for the sending unit, anti squeak pads, float cam lock, flip down license plate. Now for the questions???
(1) will a 69 camero sending unit work with my gas gauge? are they the same ohms?
(2) should I use the trunk floor braces for the camero?
(3) also can I use the camero straps
(4) Last one. What size gas line 3\8? single line. or does it require a return line also?

Any threads or just straight up answers will be greatly appreciated, Thanks

I did this and I think my post will answer your ?'s but here goes...

1. The stock 69 sending unit will work with your gauges. Same ohms.
2. I didn't use the floor braces or the camaro tank straps. Pretty easy to fab up your own with some 1x1/8 steel.
3.My 67's original tank did not have a return line so I just went with a single line sending unit. If yours had two you can probably go either way, but hopefully somoene else will jump in on that.

Good luck.
Matt

Re: Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

That's a big help. I'm not much of a fabracter I can get the braces and strap for around $100 I can get either sending unit. Think I'll go for the single line. Save some $ on the gas line. Thanks.

Re: Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

I couldn't get the camaro straps to work and all you have to do is cut and bend the tank straps to match the contour of the tank. I have ZERO fab skills but I pulled this one off. The steel will cost you 5-10 bucks compared to the tank straps and if I remember correctly the tank straps come straight so you have to bend them too. Just my .02.

Re: Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

So just pick up some straps long enough to go from one end to the other instead of buying the straps for a camero. Those would be cheaper for sure. I think I'll give it a try. Thanks

Re: Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

One problem you may or may not have.

Is your filler tube going to be higher than the tank?

If not trying to fill your gas tank via the flip down license plate my prove to be difficult at best.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Re: Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

I'll post some pics, when I get started on that part of it. just gathering parts and info right now. I just need the sending unit and the straps and the bed removed. That i'm hoping will make it much easier. I'm in the process of redoing the entire truck. I hope to have it finished by spring and ready to paint. Thanks for the advice, I will be using it wisely and defiantly asking more questions. Thanks Guys

Re: Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

Matt, I've had your thread saved since I bought my flip down license plate, at least 6 months ago or longer. Thats the first thing I bought. I came across the thread and thought I'd love to do that. I've seen the underbed tanks with the filler in the bed, just didn't appeal to me. I'm defiantly going to do it, may be awhile before I get to the back of it. But its on the list before it comes out the garage door. Thanks for posting that thread.

Re: Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

I did the same as 67Slider did, just bent some 1/8"x1" steel to the shape of the tank using a pipe wrench and a vise. As for the gas cap here's what I did.

I did pretty much the same thing as this. I think I bought 10 feet of 1x1/8 and went to work on it.

I gotta say Bad70 that is a sharp sub and amp install! Beats the hell out of my old school carpeted box back there.

Re: Gas tank swap from cab to underbed

This is the way I want to go someday. I like the contour of the tank and the idea of the flip down gas tank.
