Well, after two days of work on my console I was finally putting the last coat of clear on it, and a bug landed on it. Looks like I'm going to have to sand it out, but it's a little sketch sanding textured surfaces.

If worse comes to worse and I can't fix it, what's a safe mechanism for stripping all the paint back off it? It's just the lid, which is some kind of cheap metal.

I have a blast cabinet but no really soft media, and I'm just not sure how "tough" the surface on these console lids really is. Anyone stripped one before?

I have used easy-off oven cleaner to remove paint from plastic with success.

I use glass bead in my media cabinet, and turn down the air
pressure as low as possible

I tried glass-beading it, but even with the pressure down it started to worry me; someone mentioned that they are texturized in a layer after being cast... that might only be the plastic base, not the metal top, but I still didn't want to push my luck.

FWIW, the underside that had not be cleared yet practical ran away when it saw the bead blaster. The section I had clear coated was actually hard to remove even after just 6 or so hours. Makes me confident its a pretty durable coating.

I wound up being able to wipe it all off just using some PPG solvent. I don't know what's all in that stuff (toluene, acetone, etc) but it makes laquer thinner look like something you'd buy at Whole Foods. Took a whole roll of paper towels, but it took it all off.

Just shot the base coat again, I'll do one more and then clear it. I'll let you all know how it turns out!

i'd wet a rag with laquer thinner and work the smallest spot i could by dabbing and very lightly wiping then touch up and blend for a finished product

I'm doing base-clear... pretty hard to "spot in" two-stage paint. Suppose it could be done, but makes it tougher.

I am with Livrat the bead blast at low pressure makes the grain pop out at you when you spray the Dye gets no better than that!

The console lid is made of the same material as the two bottom pieces (tub). I'm not sure what you are saying is metal.
