Roller engine

Once again I'm back!!! This time I am trying to wrap my head around on what it takes to rollerize an engine and if you do, what type of cam should be used in it. Now that I am deployed I'm trying to make sure that when I start buying parts that they are compatible.

Re: Roller engine

It is less expensive to just find a '96-'02 L31 Vortec 350. They have the factory roller cam, and the Vortec heads. If your block is a '86-'95, then it is possible that you can use the factory roller cam assembly, and save yourself a few hundred dollars. Those parts can often times be found on Ebay or craigslist. This would only work if your block is machined for the roller cam. If that's not an option, and you have a '86 and older block, then you will need a retrofit hydraulic roller cam and lifters. Figure about $1000.00 for a retro-roller setup.

BTW Thank You for your service....'preciate it.

NO, thank you Capt Fab!!! The amount of knowledge I've gotten from you and this site is countless(if I had to pay for it I'd be broke and indebt)!! The engine is 86 and older. I thought I had the upgrades figured out at first, before I left the states and came across roller engine info. So this is the cam I had choosen before (COMP Cams K12-210-2 - COMP Cams High Energy Cam and Lifter Kits) Cam/Lifter, Valvetrain, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised. Duration 268/268, Lift .454/.454. What would be a good alternate in a roller engine?

Re: Roller engine

What cam to choose has a lot to do with how the engine is built. A Comp XE series roller cam with either 262 or 268 degrees duration is usually a good fit with a mildly built engine. There again, many factors involved. Have you tried sending an email to either Comp cams, or Lunati's tech department, and ask for their recomendation? You will need all the pertinent info when you do ask for a cam recomendation.
