Junk Yard Parts
I accidentally broke a front carburetor bolt while installing a new gasket under it. So, after loosing the battle of trying to get the bolt out. I have decided to remove the one barrel and intake and install a four barrel (Holley or Edelbrock) and intake. While I was calling around to various junk yards, I decide to ask about front k-members. I wanted to know if they had them and how much they would cost. The only pick-a-part I could find out here with the whole front end wanted $250, and that was with me pulling the parts. I think for now I am going to stick with just buying the intake for $35 (cast)- $50 (aluminum) and $50 for the carb. These places can be rediculous. If anyone in my area is getting rid of these parts please let me know.

you need to do more then just switch intakes in order to have a 4 barrel. the cam on a two barrel motor is different and from my experience doesn't work too well when a barrel is installed onto the motor. and sometimes 2 barell motors have smaller valves and running a 4 barrel would just make the motor run like poo

I'm not even sure about how big the cam and valve size is. The truck came with a 307, but my grandfather had a 350 installed when it came time for a rebuild. Sure has alot of a$$ for that little rochester.

By the way, is there a width difference between a 305 and a 350 intake?? One of the junk yard guys today didn't think there was a difference.

305 and 350 is exactly the same, the junkyard guy is probably too lazy to go and pull off an intake

What about the cam and heads? I have a complete 305 in the garage. The only thing I don't like is it has a Quadrajet with computer controls. It came out of a 87' Monte Carlo.

If you are asking about using 305 heads, the 305 and 350 are different cylinder bore sizes. It's like putting a size 5 hat on a size7 head.

I thought small block heads were small block heads. The pistons don't go into the heads.

That's correct, they bolt up the same. I think that what he's trying to say is the the bigger bore engine won't breath as efficient with the tiny valved 305 heads. They will work just fine for around town, but you won't win any races with them.

THE 305 HEADS WILL FIT ON YOUR 350, BUT IT WILL PUMP UP YOUR COMPESSION RATIO BEYOND WHERE YOU WANT IT FOR EVERYDAY DRIVING. I HAVE REPLACED STOCK 2 BARREL CARBS WITH STOCK 4 BARREL QUADRAJETS WITH OK RESULTS WITHOUT CHANGING CAMS OR HEADS. STOCK CAST IRON INTAKES SEEM TO RETROFIT ON STOCK MOTORS WITHOUT ANY MODIFICATIONS. THEY MAY NOT RUN TO OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE (EVERY ONE I'VE DONE HAS BEEN A HIGH MILAGE MOTOR WITH A TON OF WEAR) BUT THEY DID SEEM TO RUN BETTER THAN BEFORE. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG.... I'M NOT SAYING YOU CAN PUT A NEW ALUMINUM INTAKE, & A NEW HUGE 4 BARREL ON A TIRED 305 & EXPECT GREAT RESULTS. AS FAR AS JUNKYARDS.... PICK A PARTs OR PICK N PULLs GO BY WHATS ON THE COMPUTER SCREENS & WILL CHARGE YOU FOR EVERY INDIVIDUAL PART. CHECK SOME OF THE SMALLER YARDS AROUND YOU, & LOOK AT TRUCKS ALL THRU THE 70s FOR FRONTEND ASSY.s & I THINK YOU'LL FIND THEM CHEAPER THAN $250 (BUT I'VE PAID $150 FOR THEM & PULLED THEM MYSELF) I'VE DEALT WITH AN AWFUL LOT OF BONEYARDS, & I'VE ALWAYS FOUND THAT IT IS THE BUYERS RESPONCABILITY TO KNOW WHAT WILL WORK ON WHAT, & TO KNOW WHAT HE WANTS.
