Re: 12 Bolt 3.73 Posi Bundle... Worth a fart?

Stopped by the shop to see the progress... These pics don't show it, but the old ring and pinion had huge pieces of metal missing from the teeth. I will take better pictures once they're in my possession. The Pinion bearing was also shot and had come apart. Pieces of metal that had broken off at some point, had welded themselves to other parts of the ring and pinion. Terrible looking situation inside... Should be getting it out of the shop today. These guys are doing a fantastic job.

That is the new pinion, but the housing has been completely cleaned and flushed since this picture. Good eye though. These guys are perfectionists... They have taken the rear apart about 7 times to get the wear pattern perfect, and few more to get the back lash within spec...

Re: 12 Bolt 3.73 Posi Bundle... Worth a fart?

The 3.73 Posi install is complete!!! The shorter gear is nice paired temporarily with my TH400. The guys that did the install did a great job. I can't hear my rear at all no matter the rpm range. In the end I spent:

$650 - 3.73 Eaton Posi, Ring/Pinion, Master Bearing and rebuild kit.
$350 - Install, axle bearings/seals, royal purple oil.

$1000 is a great price in my opinion.

You may want to do a little homework here but the eaton posi, which by the way is one of the best posi's on the planet... should NOT be used with sythetic gear oil like the royal purple fluid.

why is that? I've only traveled about 200 miles or so thus far... What is suggested and what is the reasoning behind no synthetic oil?

Who did you have setup your rear axle? I'll be looking to have my 10-bolt rebuilt here pretty soon with 3.90s and an Eaton posi, and I'm in the Austin area.

I am going to watch your thread closely when you start putting up the number I have close to same set up. 357/3.73 gears with a Gov Loc/255.60.15's. I am going to a 700R4 in a few months. Just tryn to figure out wether or not to mess with the Lockup.

The lock up is easy to hook up, definately worth the extra effort. My rear is open, but I was running basically the same setup as you two until I got my TTII's.

My lock up is only on a vaccum switch, I still havent added the brake switch into it. I also have it on a toggle so I can turn it off when I want as well...

The lock up gave me a difference of rpms at 60 mph with a 275/60/15 of about 3-400 rpms.

Re: 12 Bolt 3.73 Posi Bundle... Worth a fart?

Just a note to everyone that visits this thread.

Based on you guys saying it was an "Eaton Posi" and Richmond gears I purchased a complete setup for my truck.

What arrived was a "Yukon Posi" and a set of "NO NAME" gears , and a "Chinese" set of bearings.

Here is my Favorite part, the Gears came with a warning that states
"Gears may be noisy after installation" WTF?

So I just wanted to warn everyone about this crap I received, Purchase at your own risk.....

Re: 12 Bolt 3.73 Posi Bundle... Worth a fart?

Yukon makes good stuff if its the same compay that also makes gear sets. I wouldnt worry about that if it is. Is there not anything anywhere stamped on the gears. It should be on the side of the ring if I remember right...

Did you buy from the same seller?

On ebay, from this seller, the eaton posi unit is 100$ more then the eaton style posi unit. Its in there discription. Could not find one of there auctions listing Richmond specific gear sets.

Re: 12 Bolt 3.73 Posi Bundle... Worth a fart?

I bought the 8.5" posi bundle with 3.42 gears from the same seller and called them beforehand to see what gears they had and was told Motive were what was in stock. When I received them there were no marking to tell what manufacturer made them, but the bearing kit I received had USA bearings in it.

I just left the mechanic shop that is installing them and there is a problem with the pinion gear. At one spot on the pinion the backlash is 0 and it binds, everything else is ok. He is going to order me another set overnight and I talked to the seller on ebay and he is going to issue a drop tag to pickup the gears and refund me the money for the gears. So far I am happy with the customer service they have offered, but I'll give my final review after I see the refund for the gears.

As of today I am in it $535 for the posi bundle minus $100 refund for gears, almost $300 for new axles(mine had a pretty bad groove wore into them), whatever replacement gears will cost me, and about $300 parts/labor. So around $1200-$1300 for the rebuild.

Re: 12 Bolt 3.73 Posi Bundle... Worth a fart?

Veinbar, Any updates on how the 12-bolt Eaton Posi/3.73 gear kit is working out? I'm looking to buy the same kit for my 12-bolt and looking to see if it's worth doing now. I'm running 2.73's behind my 5.3/4L60E, and 3.73s would be much much nicer
