BBC Rocker Arm Nut Loose!

I have a intake rocker arm nut that keeps loosening my mid 70's 454! What could be the problem? Could the nut be cracked, is that even possible?

Yep the nut is bad! They are only .37 each at the local napa. you are time and money ahead to replace all 16 while you are in there...

Re: BBC Rocker Arm Nut Loose!

Ok, I pulled the valve cover again and inspected the rocker arm nut and as far as I can tell it's NOT cracked! I also inspected the rocker arm, rocker arm stud, push rod and rocker arm ball/fulcrum and everything appeared to be in proper working order! What's funny is over the years I've overheated, run out of oil and blew up SBC & BBC engines but I've never ran across this situation before. I think I'll just go get a nut hope for the best! Wish me luck!

Re: BBC Rocker Arm Nut Loose!

It's been awhile since I've had a BB but I think it would have screw in studs. If not make sure the stud isn't backing out. A simple fix to that nut is set it where it needs to be then take a punch and ding it by the stud, makes it like a lock nut.

Re: BBC Rocker Arm Nut Loose!

Excellent advice, I wished I would have done that before putting the valve cover back on!

Re: BBC Rocker Arm Nut Loose!

The nuts for the rockers are friction nuts. Chances are they have just worn out over the years not to mention the stud can wear too
