66 Chevy K10,Odd wiring problems
Hi, I have a 1966 Chevy K10 pickup.there have been problems in the past with minor wiring issues like the starter wiring harness grounding power to my coil.
Thankfully I was able to fix that with the guidance of this site and my truck has ran great until last night. I was on my was home from work and my stereo cut out, it lost power but the backlight was still on. its happened a handfull of time before but always powered up seconds later. Well, this time it started flickering in away that would make my truck stumble and act like it was running out of gas. I stoped and looked under the dash near the stereo to find my heater control plug half plugged in. I pushed it all the way on and fired up the truck. the problem seceded for about 3 miles then out of nowhere(to my knowledge) my stereo cut out again and all my guages would jump in a rymithic "pulsing" pattern almost at the pace of a blinker relay. While doing this my truck would run in a flowing Rommp, rommp rommp. pattern with the gauges. I dont know alot about the old Chevys but I willing to learn. My only thoughts are maby ALT?? or voltage reg?Hopefully that makes alittle scence. Thankyou |

I would check that your alternator is putting out between 13.8 and 14.2 volts. One thing that often times is the culprit with electrical issues, is a bad or insufficient grounds. Check to see that the battery ground has a good clean connection to the engine. Also your cab needs to be grounded either directly or indirectly to the engine and/or battery. Also check the wiring plugs at the firewall to be sure they are snug.

Re: 66 Chevy K10,Odd wiring problems
Thank you for the response. I started wiggling the wires around near the ignition and was able to find the cause.I got lucky. It turned out to be a bad connection on the lowest ignition switch terminal. I dont get how it could of caused those symptoms but they stopped or now.
However I will be sure to check all grounds and maby add a few where necessary. Thankyou for your help |

Re: 66 Chevy K10,Odd wiring problems
I had a freaky problem once... and it was the positive cable from the battery to the starter, it was just loose on the starter end... so it would start fine and then it wouldn't... I took it apart, cleaned it up good and added a lockwasher to it, not a problem since.
electrical issues are always fun. /sarcasm. -W |
