Seats??

There are probably a hundred posts on this I just haven't been able to find them so I am asking for some help! My bench seat in my 1970 SWB GMC are completely shot! I might just order the cushions and upholstery, but wanted to know if there are more options? Like what year seats will fit into a 1970 GMC? Can I find a better seat accommodations for my truck than the original? Perhaps a 60/40 split or even some buckets that will work better? Just thought all the wisdom on this site might lend me a few seconds of advice.
Thanks for any help!!!!

Re: Seats??

The seat from an 88 and up truck bolts right in and is the same width as the original. You can use some of the original holes and have to drill some.

Re: Seats??

I am pretty new at all this and am unsure about drilling (and I have heard some people say "use shims") so I am kind of scared
When you say drill do you mean just drill and then add a bolt and nut...or something else.
Thanks for your input! Really!

Re: Seats??

as soon as i find a seat, i will do the same in my 67 i just got. i put buckets in the 95 swb i had. i believe some holes line up, i just had to mark where the other holes needed to be and drilled it. i got some grade 8 bolts, washers and lock nuts. grade 8 is probably over doing it, but the safer the better.

Re: Seats??

If you need to drill new holes for seats, use a good quality nut and bolt. You will also need to support bottom side of cab with something like a fender washer, it is a large washer with a small hole for the bolt. You want the seat to stay put in case of accidents.

Re: Seats??

Keep in mind, if you were going to spend some coin on a nice new set of seats, depending on quality, you'd spend about the same professionally reupholstering, if you did want to keep your old seats. But, if you scouted CL for a deal on some seats, that would be far cheaper. Or, if you wanted a 60/40 split bench, go measure and see if it'll fit, you can always adapt the seat mounts, or drill holes. Get some plush velour fully electric 60/40 from a Cutlass Supreme Brougham Myriad of possibilities.

Re: Seats??

I originally had a mid 80's bench when I bought the truck. Frankly, it sucked!
So I measured and searched salvage yards for size and comfort as I have a very picky lower back. Ended up with an electric 60/40 seat from a 2006 Yukon with built in shoulder belts. Was a huge step up. But after a few months I got tired of feeling cramped. The seat back was just too thick and crowded the cab room. So went on the search again while I was restoring her. This time I decided to NOT look at built in shoulder belts because the seat backs were just all too big. Ended up with an electric 40/20/40 seat from a 2003 Dodge Ram PU....with lumbar adjustment. Took some cutting on the seat frame and a little welding to add some bolt tabs. But was worth it! Now I have plenty of room and a very comfortable seat with plenty of adjustments to play with for comfort. I am going to either remove the head rests, or shave the front and back because they prevent the seat from going back to where I need it, (6'2"). They are dark grey now so looks okay with my interior. But going to have them recovered next month to early 70's period heavy black vinyl with black and white houndstooth inserts.

Here's both the Yukon and the Dodge pics. (oh yea, new smaller steering wheel helps too!)

Re: Seats??

I used the full bench out of an 88-94 vintage Chevy regular cab so it folds forward for fuel tank access.

Fits great and is very comfortable for a bench seat.

I reinforced the underside of the floor with a section of 1/8"x2" flat bar connecting both the new holes together.
