Simple green, greased lightning, gunk, hand held steamer, and paint. Small wire brushes, tooth brushes, rags, and plenty of them.

Re: how to clean a motor (with it still in the truck)
mine 79 is really bad
I'm removing the inners to wash it well, plus ez to sit on the tire and work on the block after doing the valve covers, manifolds etc, so i go to a pressure washing place, gunk shampoo,,early is better before it gets busy and no hot water left some places don't like you holding up a bay while you soak it out

If it's really cruddy, use meuriadic acid (sp) but don't get it on anything you don't want stripped. It WILL clean your engine up good. I used it on mt bare blocked 350 and then lightly scuffed with a pad and painted it with high temp paint. It turned out real nice. I really should start posting pics on here. I take progress pics every time I do something to my K5 Blazer or my short box.

Heavy Duty Easy-off Oven Cleaner, but be careful and wear rubber gloves and eye protection. Will take grease and even paint off so watch where you spray it. Then pressure wash away after soaking for 15 +/- min.
