Big block AC Delco starter question

Purchased a new starter for my 72 C20, the snout of the starter is smaller where the two long OEM starter bolts go thru. It appears shorter bolts will need to be used.

Went to several local parts stores and checked their stock for bolts, found several the correct length and threads, but the knurled part on these special bolts would not pass thru the new starter.

Anyone ever run into this?

Jeff,
It sounds like the parts store may have given you a starter for a later model, these are metric, they will work but you need the "conversion bolts" as the starters bolt holes are metric and the threads on your engine are SAE.
If you could post a picture of the starter in question we may be able to help out more.

Problem solved...boxed the A/C Delco starter back up and sent back to Rockauto, took the OEM unit to local starter rebuilder and now back in business. I sure miss the old days when you could go to the parts store and get stuff the first time right!
