how do you tell the year of the engine
I have a lq4 that I bought fomr a junk yard a couple years ago, when I got it I was told it was out of a 2006 van. I need to know how do you tell the year of the engine? is there a casting number somewhere on the block if so where is it? I know its a genIII block, it has the cps in the back of the engine and has 317 heads on it. It also had a dead head injection system on it. I was under the impresion they when to genIIII in 2006, but that was the suposed year of this engine I'm confused.

Re: how do you tell the year of the engine
Vans did weird stuff when compared to the truck and passenger car lines. Yours probably still has dive by cable, as well. Why the need to know what year, other than curiosity? I'm in for his one, too, as I have no idea how to tell specific model years outside of the different build configurations. You'd think there would be a decipherable code stamped somewhere...

Re: how do you tell the year of the engine
If you ha e the PCM its in there. Also if you have the harness, there is usually a tag by the PCM connectors that has a build date on it.
There are subtle changes through the years like the returnless fuel rail that became standard on all but the flex fuel trucks in 2004, and DBW standard in 2003. But that's trucks, I belive vans went DBW in 2006 so yours should be DBW. Posted via Mobile Device

Look on the front of the block under the water pump. There is a clock looking deal and if memory serves you can tell from that.

Re: how do you tell the year of the engine
My LS2 has a vin number stamped just behind the head on the drivers side. I called a local dealer and gave them the number and they told what year my engine was.

Re: how do you tell the year of the engine
Good info on the VIN. Pretty sure mine is a crate motor replacement, so no luck there. I have found that some also have date codes stamped below the casting numbers and above the coolant sensor port on the cylinder heads...
