700r4 question

I was told when I bought my truck it has a 700r4 in it but I want to identify exactly what version it is. Anybody out there got an easy way to identify the diferent years? I will have to do the rebuild thing soon it is slipping between 1 and 2 and cant have that.

Looking at the transmission from the passenger side (as in mounted in a vehicle), on the side of the oil pan flange (just above pan gasket) near the rear corner should be a stamped code, the first digit indicates the year, and the digits follow this rule:
9=1982 (if 2 letters after the first one)
3=1983 (if 2 letters after the first one)
4=1984
5=1985
6=1986
7=1987
8=1988
9=1989 (if 3 letters after the first one)
0=1990
1=1991
2=1992
3=1993 (if 3 letters after the first one)

Note however that some transmission shops shave the codes on their rebuilt transmission, in which case the identification becomes less accurate but can be done to some degree.

Thanks I will check it out. What years are the "early" years that are less desireable?

Especially stay away from 82-84's. They fail often and are very weak.

You can rebuild the one you have with newer internals. It should do fine.

I think most of the rebuild kits they make now, upgrade these older 700r4's anyways.

Actually (AFAIK), rebuilding a 1984 tranny with a rebuild kit will not upgrade all the weak areas of the transmission, so it'll never be as strong as the later ones. I'm not 100% sure on that though.
