Was loving the stock set-up myself, but glad you found something you like better. I would be interested in that set if you sell, but pretty sure shipping would kill any deal.

Thanks carnut, it's fun to tinker around with different flavors on this burb. At some point we want to repaint it, but for the time being...

Man I miss driving my Burb......hopefully soon.
Well Capt., you made us rethink our tire size decision and after a bit of pondering, we decided to follow your lead and go with 275/60R 15s all the way around. Glad we did, we like the look!

These ralley's were originally from a 4x blazer and the front center caps were open...my son came up with this short-term solution

We're thinking about selling all the seats out of this and going a different direction

Check out the WIW section and help us make a decision...thanks!

Re: Our "What are we going to do?" 66 Suburban Build

Since you are not staying stock and you want to lower it a little, I would suggest taking the coil overload shocks out of the back and see where it settles. Then pull the front coils and cut 1/2 to 1 coil out of the front springs. This should settle the rear up to an inch and you can lower the front 1.5 to 2 inches with coil cutting. I use Vise Grips next to the cut and a wet rag inside the Vise Grips as a heat sink and cut the coil with a Skil saw with a metal cutting blade. That way you don't damage the spring tension buy using a torch. Since you are not staying stock I would put a set of disc brakes up front. 3.73's with the 700R4 in OD is a 2.62 highway gear. That engine will not be turning many rpms. A rebuilt 350 with a 305 HO cam, an HEI with a curve kit and a quadrajet, would be a nice engine for that truck if you want it to be a cruiser. A set of nice gas shocks on it and add a front sway bar with urethane bushings, it will ride and handle like a dream. What I love about these old trucks is the A arm bushings are lubable and last forever, not like the later rubber ones that wear out.

Re: Our "What are we going to do?" 66 Suburban Build

Hey man, get out of my head!

You're almost spot on with what we've been thinking!...almost.

Talked to CPP Friday about their Grand Slam kit and adding front/rear sway bars, dropping the front 2.5" with spindles and bringing the rear down just enough to leave us with a bit of rake. The rear is sitting low (even with the overload shocks) because of the really tired stock springs...we're gonna have to do some fiquring to decide which front/rear springs to go with and get the stance right.

Now, as far as the engine goes...

I've got a nice little 468 being built down in Houston that will be pushing 500 hp on pump gas...will be picking it up mid-May

Re: Our "What are we going to do?" 66 Suburban Build

Cool, just make sure the springs are strong enough in the rear to handle the family and your picnic basket for cruises and car shows. I've seen guys put different weaker springs in the rear and have it banging off the bump stops with a couple rear seat passengers. For me I have to keep it limited to modifying stock suspension at most. My wife says I have dirt road fever and when we travel we hardly ever take one of the cars any more. I always want to know whats down that dirt road. I guess you can take the boy out of the country, but not the country out of the boy. I was born in Northwest Ohio and when I go back it still feels like home to me. 15 minutes out of any decent sized city in Northwest Ohio and your out in the country, I love that!

Yep those tires look good.

When choosing your front springs and spindles, just remember that big block is going to drop the front a little more.

Re: Our "What are we going to do?" 66 Suburban Build

One of the reasons I'm talking with CPP is their "heavy-duty" rear springs...I'd actually like to increase the rear spring rate for exactly the reasons you've stated.

Re: Our "What are we going to do?" 66 Suburban Build

Just been enjoying it while we gather up parts. We picked up a mildly built long block BBC and have been dressing it out...just finished the alt mount, working on the ps and ac compressor mounts next. We also swapped out the 700R4 for a built 400...should handle the BBC better.

Oh yea, "no replacement for displacement" holds true around this household!

I just dig big blocks, always have, always will!

This one is running forged 10:1 domes in a gen VI block w/ 049 heads, bit of a lumpy cam and a Holley 750 on a air gap.

Not alot more done this weekend, but did get the ps mount pretty much done...just got to drop a tensioner on it.

Just keep chipping away at it...

I've loved subs ever since before I could say it called them Burbans when I was about 3 or four. This one makes me love them even more. Super nice rig hope you guys really enjoy that thing.
