Need Help Finding Original 1969 Air

A friend of mine is restoring a very rare truck back to 100% original concours condition. The truck just happens to be an ultra rare 1969 COPO longbed with 427 and 4 speed Muncie. The truck was specially ordered with a passenger alternator that was dealer installed for better weight distribution at high speeds.

This truck was specially ordered on April 1st, 1969 from Possum Creek Chevrolet near Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is a very pretty Butternut Yellow (SPID Code BUTT), and still retains the original color coordinated dog dish hubcaps.

He has all 5 of the original tires that came on the truck in 1969 in the barn. Other than a few dry rotted cracks here and there, they still look pretty good with a heavy coat of Armor All.

To gain maximum judging points at the next Concours de 'Pigeon Forge show, he is going to re-mount them onto the factory COPO wheels.

The problem is, he needs to find someone who might still have some old trucks around with tires that contain air from 1969. The air could be from late 1968, but no later than April, 1969 (the build date of the truck).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I assume you mean April 1969 air? I might have what you need. This 69 was parked in the early 70's and had big old gorilla tires that still had air in them when we found the truck. It is 3/4 ton air though, does that matter?

Good eye there young man! Only 401 COPO trucks were ever produced with the optional fiberglass bumper, Code BS1.

ETsC10 - Good Question... I need 4 PLY tissue... er, I mean 4 PLY air. The 6-ply and 8-ply is reserved for the C-20 and C-50 classes only. Thanks for asking, and remember to phone home!

OldChevyGuy - The Concours de' Pigeon Forge show rules clearly state in paragraph 4, sub-paragraph BS, that "...all original air must be compressed, at a prescribed 32 pounds per square inch..." Problem is, I need air for all 4 tires. I would think it would take a LARGE flat rate box (32 PSI x 4 = 128 PSI, Pie are squared + Tires are round.

NOW WE ARE GETTING SOMEWHERE! I am really only needing 1/2 Ton, 4 PLY air from early 1969 (to comply with the build date of the truck). If you could verify the date by using the "olfactory inhale" method by letting just a touch of the air out through the valve stem (don't waste it, please), the odor of the air should be in the range of 64 highschool basketball tennis shoes, or the equivalent to 11 Large broken Easter eggs. Since I only need the 1/2 Ton air, you could leave 8 PSI (1/4 PSI assuming 32 PSI = 8 PSI) in the tire. Do you have 4 tires with 1969 air, or just one? I'm not sure about the 1970 air. I believe the federal government went to more stringent standards in the fall of 1969.

Just so you know,the original Hollanders Exchange for the 4 ply air is the same as the 8 ply air in the International pictured in the pic in post #9.It will work and be factory correct if they haven't changed it.

I have exactly what your looking for, but sorry not ready to part just yet, let me tell you there's not a moment that goes by, that someone stops at my house all hours of the day (or night) asking to buy the air out of my late model 68' bias ply tires , I did enclosed some photos of the proof to show the disbelievers that I do have the hard to find air. BTW did I mention I have I have "5" wheels with original air not 4, if by chance I change my mind which I doubt I will contact you first and entertain reasonable offer$.

C10King - You are a VERY fortunate guy! I have searched everywhere for concours correct 1969 air. You should be very proud. I will research the rule book to make sure that California air would not disqualify the truck since we live in Tennessee. If you decide to sell your air later, please contact me first.

dan42 - The hot air from politicians is prohibited in the 1/2 ton class. It can only be used in the upcoming balloon races in Washington, DC.
