Rebuilding QJet or replace...
I've got an original Qjet R-4 that seems to be causing off idle hesitation. Would a rebuild likely fix this and if so how difficult is it to rebuild this carb? I've never rebuilt any carb so keep that in mind. I'm also considering replacing it with a Edelbrock 1406. Any opinions on which route I should take would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Ken

I had the same situation...I just purchased a Q Jet 1901 which is a direct replacement for the Rochester. Actually its a new Rochester built by Eldebrock. I was considering the 1901 or Holley Avenger 770 but after reading all the resposes to the carb questions I went with the 1901. Rebuild would be cheaper but I decided on new to match the rest of the new hardware I just put in my 402BB. Look under Carburetor War which is a topic on this issue. Also Classic Heartbeat also has an issue on this topic.

if you do replace the carb then dont trash the carb especially if its older model before the mid 70s. I plan on buying up more to rebuild, i started on two today, I have very good luck rebuilding these Q jets, they are easy to rebuild and operate more efficiently than Holley carbs, edelbrock and Rochester are same design, they use metering rods instead of crappy power valves. rebuld kits come with exploded view of the carb all disassembled, once you have rebuilt a couple then youll alsways know how to, its not hard,.

I would go ahead and rebuild the Qjet, kits are cheap at around $25. Dont forget to pick up a new float too. If you still have problems with it, i would suggest getting a Edelbrock 1406. The 1901 Qjet may be a better carb, but i could not afford to spend almost $400 on one, so i bought the 1406. I like it alot, it gave me quite a boost in power, and the electric choke kicks a$$.

I'm very tempted to just get the Edelbrock 1406. I've heard that it's easy to tune, stays tuned, adds power and increases fuel economy over the Qjet. For $250 that sounds too good to be true...which makes you wonder if it is too good to be true.
