weird starting issue

I'm not sure how to even explain this issue as it's very weird.

most time my truck starts amazing for an old carbarated truck (even on cold days and not having the choked hooked up)

but some times it has a hard time starting and if it does start it spits and sputters and some times quit the only "cure" for it is to rev it till it "clears up" and then its fine....it's very weird and I would like to get it fixed so ppl don't stare at me when I start it up and have to rev it to get it to run right lol.

Does it only do it when the block is cold or hot, or does it do it anytime?

Re: weird starting issue

Oh, have you thought about putting a manual choke on?

Is your trucks choke controlled by power or hot air?

Re: weird starting issue

I'm not a 100% sure but I think the easiest way is to find a manual choke carb, then run a choke cable into the cab. Though I think you can get a kit to switch you electric choke to manual.

Re: weird starting issue

Do you have the Rochester q-jet,that has the electric metering solenoid on top? If so,you'll want to replace the carb with an earlier one. When the solenoid screws up,it can cause the problems you're having,or worse! A new solenoid(if you can find one),is expensive and difficult to tune in.Mine went bad,and I used 3/8 tank of fuel to get 2 miles home!Had to change the plugs, carb, gasket, oil, and filter!
