they are plugs to fill in the holes left behind from removing the smog equipment. mine has the same thing, the square headed brass plugs are what I used also. hope this helps.

Ok, Here it is , These are Driver's and Passenger's side pics of 305 manifolds
Item 1# is the ONLY "Square head" anything on the engine where you are referring Please ignore the fact these are mounted on a 1992 engine , the manifolds are from the original 87 305 Item 2# is the standard mounting bolts that came from the factory on my 305 engine ![]() ![]() Desert |

Here is a pic of a 1987 305. It has a smog air pump on it. Like someone said before. Sometimes people take the air pump system off, and then put plugs in the holes in the exhaust manifold.
