Re: what's necessary to do a big block swap?

Just got finished swapping out from a small block to big block on my 1971.
I used the tubular motor mounts from performance online, tubular transcrossmember from classic performance, and a set of Hedman part #HED-69136 headers and it bolted right in place. Only issues I had was with clearance to radiator gets a little close when using a long water pump when bolting engine in front holes on frame rail. I moved my motor back and redrilled holes in frame rails to give me more radiator to water pump clearance. Not sure about yours though with the serpentine setup you will just have to bolt it all in and see.

I've done the big block, turbo 400 swap into low hump cab trucks before and both trucks needed fresh cab mounts to get decent clearance between the floor and trans. Old saggy mounts allowed it to rub, new mounts gave enough clearance to pass your hand between the floor and trans.

My truck is also a low hump cab with a turbo 400 and a big block installed...everything fit without any problems.

Re: what's necessary to do a big block swap?

I am starting this same project this week. I have a 71 gmc 2500 2wd 350/350 and I am going 454/350. Looks like I will be having some fun.

Thanks for the good info.

Hey feller, I've got a factory four barrel intake and good quadrajet carb, fuel pump and clutch fan that came off my '83 454 in my '69 truck if you're interested. I may have some other stock big block stuff.

You will want to swap that TBI specific distributor for an older HEI with vacuum advance. Or your old SB point dist will work, if you have clearance issues with the large cap HEI.
I would use a Pertronix or similar.

Yeah thats what I was going to mention also, If you use a MSD igniton box such as a 6A or 6al, you can use just about any distributor, since only the pick ups are needed with one of those. If not your gunna need an older non computer Dizzie. Have you gotten an auto Xmemebr yet? I have one that I'm not using. I'll give somebody a good deal. PM me if you need one.

Re: what's necessary to do a big block swap?

Any updates? How much clearance do you have with the serpentine setup to your rad? R u going to run electric fans or can you run a clutch fan? Subscribed as I am going to run a similar setup on my 77BBC.

Re: what's necessary to do a big block swap?

I know this is an old thread, but my pops and I are contemplating swapping the 6 cyl/ 3 ott in his 71 GMC for a 73 454 and a mid 80's 700r4. I still have the 73 donor and was thinking I would use the clamshells from it. Does anyone know if the 73 radiator wil fit?

I am almost positive it won't, but someone else will chime in.
