Rearend ratio and stall?

71 c10 weekend cruiser/highway NO drag strip with a 468 bbc and built th350 tarnny. Looking for some advice on what stall and if I need to change the rear gear I'm pretty sure (will know soon) the truck has 3.08 gears just wondering if I should change to a lower gear when I install the eaton posi? I am running a 30 inch rear tire also... Here are some specs...

Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, 1" spacer, HEI distributor, MSD plug wires, fully rebuilt heads with new valve springs, new seals,10 degree locks, retainers and lash caps, stainless steel valves (2.25I 1.88E), full roller rockers, JoMar stud girdles, new Comp Cams xm 278h-565 lift-234/244 dur @ .50 , forged SpeedPro pistons, ARP main studs, new rings, flowtech headers.

ALL suggestions/advice wanted!!!...Thanks

Re: Rearend ratio and stall?

I'll bet it makes some damn good torque. That said you could probably get away with a moderate stall. Something like 2300 with 3:73 gears.

That's just my "somewhat educated" guess. I have a 383ci/700r4 with 520 lift 244/244 cam with 2k stall and 4:11s. It makes a good torque down low so I was able to run the lower stall.

Re: Rearend ratio and stall?

I'd stall it about 2500-3000, 3:55 gears. (more for freeway) 3:73 would get more 'punch' off the line yes, but then traction comes into play, .. more stressful on Ujoints, Etc. Just my .02. If Eaton makes something between 3:73 and 3:55 (?) That might be the ticket.

Do you have stock axles in the truck?

Re: Rearend ratio and stall?

I'd leave the 3.08's for a street cruiser. It might not jump the lights as quick but witth the 1:1 final drive ratio, you will still be able to run 65 or so on the hiway with out twisting it's tail.

Re: Rearend ratio and stall?

One thing you have to consider with a stall is cruising RPM. Your stall HAS to be lower than your cruise RPM by at least 400 unless your running a lockup converter/trans. More info on your engine combo would help greatly in recommending the proper stall/gear. Without knowing your heads flow numbers it's hard to judge hp/tq curves, also weight of the truck as it will normally cruise will help.
