Rear Drum Brake Help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys,
I swapped out my original rear for a brand new, powdercoated rear with new axles, locker, gears, etc, etc.

The right rear wheel assembly is missing the bolt that the two brake pads pivot on that is right above the cylinder. (See Picture - The picture isnt mine......just found it on the internet)

Does anyone know where I can get one of these and the nut that is on the backside as well? I already tried to use my old one, but after beating on it and heating it up, Im convinced its not coming off.

I have a couple of spare backing plates that have the bolt in question still attached will see what kind of shape they are in and try to get one off if you think that you could use it. When I did my 68 we could not find a supplier who carried replacement parts for it. Free just cost of the ride.

i've never had any luck removing them either

you could just take that old backing plate you have get it powdercoated and use that

I just took one off of the front spindle. You would have to get a nut for it because on the front it screws into the spindle. I don't want to jump ahead of anybody so let me know if you need it and I will send for free. Wayne

Looked at the backing plates and was wondering what the nut on the rear of your backing plate looks like? There is a washer type keeper on the front of the pivot to keep it from working loose. The rear nut on the two spares that I have may be diffrent than on the 70. The front pivot bolts screw into the spindle they tend to come out eaiser than the rear. Applied some PB blaster so we will see how it works out.

Dealing with this issue now, I don't believe the rears come off. Check on the other side and there are 2 hex heads that attach to your wheel cylinder. I didn't notice until I actually looked at the new wheel cylinder. We almost mangled the piss out of before we stopped to look...

This is the one out of a front spindle.

The rear do come out, but it takes the application of lots of HEAT

to get them to move. I have one out if you would like to have it. Still in good shape and I just need to know where to send it.

Got one loose and all it took was a whole lot of heat and a big A----s wrench and hammer. You might have to dress the surface of the bolt where the brake shoes pivot but it's not perfect. Let me know where to send it.
