Got me a van tilt today!

Went to the junk yard yesterday with a few friends and happened to come across a van tilt from a 77 I believe. Pretty good shape but its for an auto, i'm gonna try to modify it since I have a standard. I'll get some pics later of it but for 40 bucks I think I did alright!

Re: Got me a van tilt today!

Congrats, that will be nice - I'm using an auto van tilt in my 69 - a little grinding and filling and it is now a manual column. I got lucky and didn't need to buy the wiring adapter.

Re: Got me a van tilt today!

I cut the pigtails off the van and took them with me just in case I needed them, so hopefully I don't have an issue.

Re: Got me a van tilt today!

I'm glad we were able to find you one! Luckily it was pretty easy to pull as well.

Yukon, when you modified yours did you just grind/bondo/repaint the auto collar or did you remove the shift lever linkage that comes out the bottom as well?

Re: Got me a van tilt today!

I just cut the linkage arm off the bottom of the steering column. For the collar, I cut off the offending stuff then cut up a beer can and used JB Weld to affix it on the inside of the collar, then put JB Weld on the outside, let it dry and ground it down - worked very well. Here is a photo album showing what I did.

Nice! That's what I have been envisioning all the times I have told Jtrux to just get an auto column for his standard trans Blazer.

Re: Got me a van tilt today!

If you are asking me, the link in my above post still is active and has pics of the modifications I did.
