Re: 350 or 454?

The cam I have for the engine on my stand is a hydraulic roller from Crane, but a flat tappet cam with similar duration numbers should be fine...214/221 @ .050 on a 114LSA. Duration numbers in this area with a 112 or 114 lobe separation angle should yield good economy and make good torque numbers. No lope, great vacuum. This one will be fine with fuel injection, some of the older systems are finnicky about cams any bigger than this.

One more question is there any easy way to tell a 350 from a 305 in the truck

Re: 350 or 454?

There is really no comparison when it comes to power output between a properly running stock 350 and a stock 454.

If you want a truck to do what it's meant to do, (tow and haul) a big block is the engine to have. If you want something to tool around town in and look good at the local mall, a 350 will get the job done

My 79 1 ton with it's 454 towed nice in stock form, and would run away from my fathers newer TBI small block truck (both of us pulling a loaded car trailer) Every grade we hit on the highway he would fall back about a mile

For more power and economy, I swapped in a Performer camshaft, Performer intake, and a set of 1 3/4" long tube headers with a 3" dual exhaust system. It went from a decent running truck to a tire burner and ran 14.70's at the track (not bad for a 5400 lbs. truck ) and raised some eyebrows on the street. Knocked down 14 mpg too, I couldn't ask for much more with a 400 turbo and 3.73 gears.

I recently installed a new GM 502 crate (still with peanut port heads) but it has a more modern roller camshaft setup. I transferred over the same intake and carb, and the same headers. Night and day difference from the old 454. New track times to come, the curiosity is killing me

Re: 350 or 454?

Yeah I think I'm going to go with a 350 my truck is only a 1/2 ton and I just want to build a motor. I think I will leave the bodie for a wile and make a nice sleeper out of it. It being my first build I think the 350 is eazy and cheep.

I feel that no matter what you drive, pinto, old camero, yugo, there's something about opening a hood and seeing a monster big block tucked up inside. Kinda like a surprise sleeper? 454 turbo

Re: 350 or 454?

ok guy i have an 80 c30 wreaker that i have had a crate 350 and a 81 454. gas wise i got 10mpg load or unloaded but the truck is 10k and the power out of the 454 is great the 350 i had my foot in it all the time and had to wind it up the 454 i can just cruse it and it dose the job fine. as far as building them they are the same just bigger i have done both a 350 and a 582 same power 700 the 350 was no ware near street as the 582 was on pump gas and just as much hp and 150 more tq. now in real world not track life you will put a lot more strain on the 350 and risk braking something then a big block. THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT. had a teacher in uti that built off shore boats motors and i payed close attention to what he said so i will go with the big blocks but for a fun street car the is cheaper and user freindly i still have my 350 in my 78 monte carlo and my 86 c20. now you want real towing power diesel all day as that is what is next for my c30 5.9ctd c20 detroit diesel 453t and my 85 6.2 will get the cummin's commin rail 6.7. that is the plan anyway lol
