Aux fuel tank color.

1972 C20 with factory aux fuel tank. Does anyone know if it was chassis color or body color? The truck has been repainted in the past so there is a little blue but the rest is road grim and lite rust. I have yet to drop it from the bottom of the bed so maybe that holds my anwser. On the same subject im looking for a original tank selector for the floor. Any help would be appreciated.

First question, would be are you speaking of the RPO NL2 factory tank? It was mounted on the left side and had a filler extending up and out through the bed. It had a dash mounted selector switch on the far left.

The other would be saddle tanks, these were either GM accessory (dealer installed) or aftermarket. The accessory tanks and most aftermaket used access doors hacked through the side of the bed. These saddle tanks generally used a floor mounted selector typically found beside the seat next to the door. The selector is pretty universal.

Haven't seen a "new" NL2 tank for a very long time but I'd imagine they were the factory tinplate finish.

The saddle tanks I have had were all painted black of some sort.

Re: Aux fuel tank color.

The tank is mounted on the left side up close to the cab, with a filler extended through the bed side. There is a switch in the dash on the far left. There never was a valve in the floor but it looks like there is a place where one once was. The only reason I asked because the guy I bought the truck from said I needed to find a valve if I wanted to use both tanks. He may not of known either. The glove box sticker says aux fuel tank so I was assuming it was a factory install.

Re: Aux fuel tank color.

So you believe it was bare steel or undercoated like that frame?

Re: Aux fuel tank color.

I believe on the NL2 factory aux tank that the switch on the dash only switched the gas gauge over to the aux tank sending unit and that there was a floor valve to switch the fuel flow. I have never seen one of these tanks painted.

Re: Aux fuel tank color.

Any ideas on where to find a original valve? I was told awhile back it was the same valve found in an on chevy straight truck which would make it alot easier to find.

Re: Aux fuel tank color.

I would try Napa. They probably can't get by application, but I have bought tank selector valves from them.
