cooling fans

Hello to everyone, I'm thinking of replacing my steel water pump and top and bottom pulleys with polished aluminum parts. I would also like to change the original steel cooling fan to another fan that looks a little better. Would that be a bad idea? Would using the steel one be better? Thanks, George

Re: cooling fans

I guess it depends on what you consider "looks better". Do you have a rigid, fixed-blade fan now? If so, a clutch fan will not only be quieter, it will cool a lot better. And to my eye, it looks a lot better also.

Re: cooling fans

Hi Jay, yes, my original fan is a clutch fan. I'm replacing a few steel parts (water pump, top and bottom pulleys) with polished aluminum parts and was thinking of a more modern and lightweight fan rather than the steel fan.

Re: cooling fans

Virtually any engine-driven fan that you replace your clutch fan with will be a downgrade. If you just want to do away with the clutch fan, why not go with an electric fan?

Good morning Jay, your reply made me think twice. I think I'll just stay with my clutch fan. I'll take off the fan, take off the clutch, bead blast the fan, paint it and put it back together. That way will be cheaper, it'll look good and I'll keep what's best. Thank you so much for all your help Jay, I really appreciate it. You take care and have a great week, George

Re: cooling fans

Glad to help, but for the record, I am not Jay.

The El Jay in my sig was a highly regarded board member who, sadly, is no longer with us.

Re: cooling fans

I didn't know and I'm very sorry for both. I guess I didn't pay attention to the RIP in front of his name. Please forgive me. Take care, George
