Should I replace the window motor/regulator or BOTH?

Got an '86 who's window motors are done...I think.

The don't roll up or down, but they'll click when you hit the switch and that's it.

I'm going to take them out and see if they can be cleaned up. Maybe it's a bad connection or something (if I'm lucky).

So let's say the motor needs to be replaced. Is this one of those where since I've got the whole thing out I might as well replace it all or just the motor?

Just the motor unless your regulator is bent or has stripped teeth.

Fair enough. Still in the process of getting it out and looking it over. Got it loose, now it's just gotta come out some magic hole.

I find that the arm needs to be at a 90* angle to the mount to be able to rotate the regutator out of the door.

When you get the motor out, check the leads going to the motor plug with a 12V tester and operate the switch just to make sure that the motor has power going to it. If you need new motors get OEM Delco motors from one of the online OEM vendors. You can have a bad pigtail going to the motor - that pigtail is still available.

Re: Should I replace the window motor/regulator or BOTH?

Well, that was fun.

Parts store only had one...good for me cause that's all I felt like doing.

I don't which was more fun...taking it out, or putting it back in. One down though and one to go.

When I finally got the whole thing out, I tested everything out. Switch was good, pigtail was good. Even gave the motor a couple of taps. It just clicked. Even disconnected from the regulator it wouldn't budge.

I cleaned up the regulator and regreased the tension spring and wheels. All's well now.

I appreciate the advice along the way.

Good news is I don't anticipate the other side taking quite so long
