Smog/emissions delete

Wanting to clean up the engine bay on my new truck. Make it easier to look at and work on at the same time. My state doesn't care.

The only requirements is that I don't loose MPG's and no check lights to stare at..

One of my main worries is the stuff up by the A/C lines(little silver cap and the plug stuff). I have no idea what this stuff is and what it does..

Chunk it all? Fuel vent?

All this is smog pump related and is good to go, right? What about holes in the headers?

What does the vacuum line up the left side to a electrical connectiong do? And why is the manifold vacuum run to the windsheild cleaner line on the right.

Feel free to point out any lines that are safe to remove! Thanks!

Re: Smog/emissions delete

To be honest with a computer controlled Q-jet if it is all working correctly I would leave it alone. There is no way to remove the hose, AIR system, EGR, and wiring and not have a check engine light. Probably not the answer your looking for though. If you are heart set on it your going to need another carb (a Q-jet or an adapter to put a square flange Carter/Edlebrock/Holley) a 5 pin HEI distributor (before computer controlled HEI) and then alot of careful removal and routing of wires and vacuum hoses. Seeing that you have a 4.3 V6 there was never a non AIR exhaust manifolds for that chassis (non AIR 4.3 came in the next gen trucks). I am not too sure that there was ever a 90° Chevy V6 that came without a computer controlled HEI, you have the option to maybe go to something like MSD.

I really would not do this if it were me, your going to end up with driveability issue if your not careful and your mileage could suffer.

Re: Smog/emissions delete

I pulled it all off of my 86 GMC with the 305 and dont have a check engine light on. You could just pull the bulb. I removed the pump and related tubing, replaced the carb with a non electronic version and rewired the distributer to get rid of the spark control module. I had cast iron manifolds so I just found some plugs to seal them off until I can replace them with headers. With the manifolds you have, you may have to pull them and have a metal shop weld them up. Im not sure of the 4.3 exhaust but was told the 454 manifolds that look like those are stainless, so take that into consideration when trying to fill the holes. Many people just cut the tube , fold it over and pinch it closed. It doesnt look great, but will work until they can be sone properly. Not sure how much is different between the 4.3 and the 5.0 on emmissions side, but am sure the carb and the distributor are going to require the most modifications.

Re: Smog/emissions delete

I have never heard of removing the emissions and getting worse gas milage, only better. that being said, if you have the time and patients, go to autozone and get some vacuum hose assorted plugs, and start pulling stuff off and plugging it. if you cap everything and it runs like crap, kicks the engine light, or gives worse gas milage (again never once heard of this happening) then, just remove the plugs and hook it all back up. if it all works out, then you can start removing the lines from the engine compartment and cleaning it all up.

thats what I did with mine.

The only thing I have heard of that can net better gas mileage are egr valves.

Re: Smog/emissions delete

Yes the headers are stainless. The tube Is welded in. There is a threaded connection up the tube. I was going to cap it there so I could reattach anything back on later. Guess I'll just do smog pump first.

I have been looking for a pre-80's Qjet to play around with anyway. I didn't realize the distributor was a problem too...

First pic is my 79 K5 before it went on a vacuum hose diet (emissions deleted), after is once it was cleaned up. Amazing what a difference it made, ran like a top after.

Mail it to me.....

I hear that if you plug the hoses it will be fine, but I don't know that from experience. I saw someone on here was asking the same question about the charcoal canister.

Re: Smog/emissions delete

You'll need some of that stuff on your TBI, otherwise you throw the computer in to a frenzy. We took all the stuff off the manifolds and ditched the pump on my 87. Left the EGR and such.

Re: Smog/emissions delete

Smog pump, is a part on the front of the engine, has a belt around a pulley. Is below the alternator. You can delete it.

Re: Smog/emissions delete

I believe you'll want to keep the vapor canister with your 87. Also, if you're doing headers start learning about a preheated O2 sensor.
