Stabilizer Bar? Its Purpose?

I noticed this bar coming from my axel to my frame has been cut off. I took this picture off the one on my parts truck. Do I need this? What was it's purpose?

Re: Stabilizer Bar? Its Purpose?

Panhard bar to keep a 2wd axle centered i.e. coil spring axle. Most blazers/jimmy are 4wd leaf sprung axles...no need for the panhard bar.

Re: Stabilizer Bar? Its Purpose?

Yes you need the panhard bar. It keep the rear solid with the rest of the truck. Any of these trucks with coils and trailing arms has it. Leaf spring trucks did not have it.

Re: Stabilizer Bar? Its Purpose?

Well that pic was of a 72 Chevy truck with coil springs. But my blazer of course has leaf springs, so should I connect a pan hard bar? Or is there no need since I have leaf springs?

Re: Stabilizer Bar? Its Purpose?

Do not install it if you have leafs. My guess is that your rearend was swapped at some time with one from a coil spring truck. Do your leaf spring pads look like they have a non-factory weld?
Is the bracket for the bar on your frame?

Re: Stabilizer Bar? Its Purpose?

Good points, I guess my rear end couldve been swapped from a truck, but it is a 12 bolt. Did trucks come with a 12 or 10?
-haven't noticed welds where the pads are, but i will look.

And no the bracket isn't there, but on the side of the frame it looks like something has been cut off. But I noticed that same mark on the frame of the truck the above pic is from. I will post pics of each outer frame so you can see what I mean.

Re: Stabilizer Bar? Its Purpose?

Blazers came with a 12 bolt rear regardless of 2wd or 4wd. With the 4wd, the rear had leaf springs and they keep the rearend centered. No need for a panhard bar with leaf springs.
