master cylinder
i need a master cylinder for a 1/2 ton '72 suburban with power front discs. when i go to the parts store, they want to know if it's the bendix type or the delco type. how do i tell which one i have? thanks in advance.

I just had to figure this one out myself a couple weeks ago for my 71 longbed with the same brake set-up. I was told, and I have read, that it says somewhere on the booster or the calipers if they are bendix or delco, but if those have been replaced with an aftermarket item (like my booster was) than it is pretty tough. Check those and see if you find anything.
I found nothing, so when I replaced my master cylinder, I made sure that I had the old one with me at the parts counter. When I replaced my booster, I looked on the internet for a long time, for pictures of delco vs bendix boosters and was able to determine that mine is a delco set-up. Anyone know why there is or would be a difference? Assembly plants in different parts of the country or what? |

There are pictures on this site. The first booster is a Bendix and the last booster is a Delco.

Those are good pix, but if you are right, then I have a problem (as does the Kragen I went too). I determined that I had to replace a Delco which looked exactly like the first one. That is what I ordered and that is what I got and that is what is now working in my truck...but no one called mine a Bendix, and it is (new one) and was (old one) a spittin image of the first one pictures in that link.

Well does anyone have a way to determine if a master cylinder is for
use with manual or booster setups? I have 3 master cylinders that look exactly alike. I put a booster behind my original manual master cylinder and it worked but I didn't feel safe so I swapped it with the master cylinder that came with the booster. Anyone know how to tell the difference?

This thread comes right down to my question as well. Has anyone heard of a rebuild kit for a brake booster on a '72???
Yes, I could go drop $80 on a new/reman one from Auto zone ..NAPA...? but have sons birthday around the corner and things are tight here. (maybe I'm just cheap..hehe) Can't be much to a brake booster? Some seals and O-rings? I can here mine hissss now and the old 350 runs like it's got a big vacuum leak now...hmmm Can anyone help...advice?  thanks all......
