1974 GMC Stepside "Super Custom 1500"

Hey guys, this is my first post on this site. My dad has a 1974 GMC stepside Super Custom 1500 .He wants to get more info about the truck. For some reason, every site we go to it can decode the VIN, and that has got us wondering. the VIN is TCZ144Z502401. The truck was olrigianly a 454 Truck. It currently has a 350 with the trubo 400 tranny. When he bought the truck he was told that the rims and tires were olrignal too. However, these are the same rims and tires that were used on the 74 Stingrays. Is it possible this was a special order truck? I have tried to find a 74 Stepside Super custom, and I have only been able to find one. It has the 6 clynder. I have found plently of Long boxes and 2500's.

What does the Super Custom means, is it a trim package? If so what is the difference between the base model and this one.

Re: 1974 GMC Stepside "Super Custom 1500"

T = GMC
C = 2 wheel drive
Z = 454 V8
1 = 1/2 ton
4 = Pickup
4 = 1974
Z = Fremont CA
Last 6 digits are control #'s only.

That's all we can tell you about your truck unless we have the option label (SPID). The wheels, without seeing a photo it is impossible to tell you a single thing other than "they are probably aftermarket and not factory", but that's just a guess.

The Super Custom was the next to the bottom in trim level with only the Custom level being lower. The Custom and Super Custom were probably mostly found as work trucks.

Re: 1974 GMC Stepside "Super Custom 1500"

The Super Custom is mid-level trim. Most work trucks would be Customs. The next level was Sierra/Grande. It has some chrome,but not all,and the interior was nicer,but w/o carpet (I believe). That would be a pretty special truck. I'm sure it was ordered by someone who wanted a toy. Stepside were hot in the '70s and that one was obviously intended to be a hot truck. Tel us more...color,other options. The engine has nothing to do with trim level and neither do most options. A base model truck can have more on it that top of the line. But,there are certain trim features the top of the line comes with that aren't available on a lower trim level. The SPID is the sticker that lists all the options w/codes. It's white with a blue border at the top listing VIN and model #s

Agree.

Additionally, it's not physically possible for GM to use the same wheels on a '74 Corvette and a '74 pickup, since the bolt circle on the Corvette is 5 holes on a 4.75" diameter, and the truck is 5 holes on a 5" bolt circle.

The GVW is not what the truck weighs; that's the "base weight" (aka "curb") plus the payload capability.

So GVW is what it weights totally loaded up with people and cargo.

Re: 1974 GMC Stepside "Super Custom 1500"

Hey thanks for the reply guys, once I find my camera cord I will upload some. It is Black with a Black interoir. I am a Ford guy, so I do not know what options this could have came with? Also where is this sticker at? I knew there had to be some kind of "data plate" on the car, just couldn't find it. I looked under the hood and on the door. There is a sticker on the door, but only info on it was the VIN.

Re: 1974 GMC Stepside "Super Custom 1500"

On your 74 it should be on the left inner wheel well under the hood. Blue and white label that says "Service Parts Identification" at the top.

Yep those are factory rally's. Probably not original to your 74, those look like 8in wide with the 77-87 center caps and an aftermarket spinners.

You can get those wheels new, 8" to 10" for a little over $100 per wheel.
